GReddy SP Elite Axle Back

This is my first post, mostly thanks to how much info is already here; I didn't have many questions that weren't answered by a little searching.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the first SP Elite exhausts for our cars. It's basically the Spectrum Elite without the burnt style tip. I chose this for the tip and because the SE seemed to be one of the quietest exhausts for the car. And that is were my dilemma lies.

First start up and cold running, the exhaust sounds great. Not too loud, good sound; but once it gets hot it's so loud and droning at all RPM. And I don't mean a little loud, I mean open exhaust loud.

It also wiggles around on the ball-socket flange a lot easier than the stock muffler did.
Has anyone had trouble with their SE not sealing well at the flange?
Has anyone tried using standard bolt/nut at the flange without the springs? Or maybe shimming the spring with washers to increase compression?

Noise aside, the fit and finish of this thing is perfect. Install was easy. It looks great too.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

DAMN! I was actually gonna buy this exhaust but now...im sad. a quick suggestion, did you try using a spacer from advanced auto/ pep boys to create a better seal at the flange?

Don't give up yet. I'm hoping that perhaps it's just a bad seal and can be fixed.

Spacer?

from the video on greddys website it definitely sounds way louder than the SE, and the se doesnt drone.

i have had no issues with fitment of the SE , pics of your fitment might help.

IF PEOPLE DONT LIKE THE SE BECAUSE OF THE BURNT TIP THEN JUST REMOVE THE BURN FROM THE TIP !!!!

Can someone tell me why on the greddy site, that the SE exhaust is the cheapest priced one for Lancer? That and Honda FIT has the cheapest priced SE exhaust, where as all other cars cost much more......

Spacer?
Well I guess its not called a spacer. What I meant is a gasket, and some sealant. http://bighealey.co.uk/content/85g-u...gasket-sealant (Keep in mind I just Google's it up and you can find it at autozone or a hardware store)

When I effed up the downpipe on my old aveo I had to replace it but it had a bad seal. It sounded was louder than before and had a "raspy" sound, and all I needed was a new gasket seal to close it up tight

I paid well under msrp including shipping. Which, I'll be honest, is pretty cheap. But I'm pretty sure I'm just going to be putting the stock muffler back on and selling it. I can't take the noise. It's absurd and I feel like a complete jackass every time I start off from a light. It makes so much noise at even light throttle.

I will admit that as it's broken in, it's gotten a little quieter and with the windows down, at full throttle, it sounds excellent. But under normal driving it's just too loud for me.

By the way, the site states that its similar style like the SE doesn't mean its the same as the SE but with silver looking tip.

At idle, taken with my Atrix. Sooo quiet when it's cold. The video is mostly to show the install.
Looks good doesn't it?

update:
Decided to try a similar product to what melficersx linked. It was Permatex Ultra Copper RTV. Basically a high temp gasket silicone designed for exhaust manifolds etc.
It helped a lot. It got rid of the farty noise the exhaust was making which I now am sure was a leak at the flange.
It sounds a lot better and a lot more refined, but it's still too loud for me. Maybe I'm just getting old.
So it comes off and the OE muffler goes back on. Anyone else who wants to give it a try, PM me and we can talk price. I'll post in classifieds with pics once I take it off.

I wish I've read your post yesterday as I'm having same issues with SP Elite (burnt tip) exhaust - it is stupid loud on my GTS (I used to have a custom dual cat back on my Cavalier and it was not THAT loud). Also the fact that I have a sportback makes it's worse since my car does not have sealed trunk space to dumpen some of the sound from the exhaust and it travels straight through into the car. I will give it a try with the sealant, but I'm pretty sure that I will have the SP Elite up for sale sometime next week with OEM being back in its place.

I have the SP elite myself and I think mine isn't loud enough lol. Also how were you able to get the tip to sit so well? Mine is a little low and sticks out further
