magnaflow universal muffler

Does anybody have an opinion of the maganflow universal mufflers. I realize they are probably just rice cans, but my local shop told me he could work out a good deal on one for me. He also said they are virtually the same thing as the vehicle specific mufflers. I'm just going to use it as an axle back right now. Would this be an unwise move on my part? I'm really concerned with losing torque by opening the exhaust flow more than I need to. I'm going to look at what he has in stock later today, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

PS - Another local shop (www.wendlandperformance.com) qouted me $20 over suggested retail for the Magnaflow bolt on cat-back... I hate them almost as much as my local Mitsu service tech. I have to go to a ford dealership for warranty work, and they seem to not care at all about working on my car.

...just a rant

the maganflow mufflers wont sound ricey, they are the same quality as the rest of magnaflow. you wont lose much, if any torque with just an axleback, you should be fine for now, then later on you can complete it with the midpipe. good luck.

Magnaflow, as stated above, aren't going to give you that ricey sound at all. Would you believe I have a '95 Escort with a universal Magnaflow (forget the model #) that I get commented on all the time about how others like the sound more so over other "rice"-like mufflers. Gives off a deep, low-tone that is pretty mellow even under hard accleration.

If the Maganflow universal sounds low, then why wouldn't the ebay $30 muffler sound the same? I went to the shop and looked at a few, and they all have the strait through design with sound absorber material around the vents. If that's all it is, wouldn't it be sane to get a generic universal muffler? It seems to be the exact same thing, and again, it's only an axleback.

I've had my Magnaflow Universal Muffler for over a year. The sounds is great - deep, nice, not too loud. Not where near ricey like Flowmaster.

If magnaflow mufflers were exactly the same as the cheap, ebay ones, they'd cost the same. A lot more design and work goes into the magnaflow to get their distinctive sound. Plus the cheap ones have a habit of falling apart.
