That's true...

At least you will be lighter if nothing else. I'm still P O'd at how heavy that thing was...It goes completely against what I am trying to accomplish. I might have to research to find a lighter one or find 5hp somewhere else. That's probably my best bet.

Man after rereading that I just realized how obsessed I am with this project car.

SRT's also have a turbo which helps quiet the exhaust down to begin with.

Any N/A 4-banger with a straight exhaust is going to sound ricey.

DING!

well, its not actually warm up, but you need to build up a good layer of carbon deposit (which is great on toast btw) before the sound will quiet down. bare metal just seems to make the sound louder, but after driving around for a while, the carbon buildup will dampen the sound

think back to when you first got your headers or you first put your catback on, they were alot louder at first, but quieted down a bit after some wearing in

True

It's much much better today. When the tech asked if it was any quieter I really couldn't tell. Today though I can't really hear the exhaust when I start up and driving regularly it's much quieter.

If you find that you are still unhappy you can try adding more of a muffler inb the place of the resonator. I didn't like the highway sound of the magnaflow cat-back, so I cut out the 4" resonator and put in an 18" 5x8 in it's place. Still a magnaflow, but decreased the highway noise by 50-75 %. Just another option. BTW I think the muffler I use for a resonator is about 25 lb.

Didja read the part about the resonator? I was saying that a properly placed res can do just as good a job as a res and muffler (which is just an exhaust-end resonator)

You could also try adding some sound dampening materials. Just throw some of that all around ther rear seats and trunk area. Dynamat is the the most well know, but ther are better materials for the money.

Just a resonator (w/o a muffler) isn't enough to quiet it down.

I finally got to go on a little highway trip today and the sound was so much better.

I had something strange happen though.

At 3/4 tank I hit 120miles, at half tank I hit 220 miles and at 1/4 tank I am at rough 330 miles. I used to get 330miles tops out of a full tank of gas. I didn't exactly drive conservatively either so I am still suprised. I usually get atleast 40 more miles out of a tank from this point and that would put me near 400 miles!!!!!!!!!!!! for this tank.

I don't know if it's the cooler air too but that's near impossible to improve the mileage that much.

Going to keep track of it.

I forgot to ask if anyone knows if a leaky exhaust can cause poor gas mileage?

I know someone that has 3 resonators installed just to get it quite enough.

Btw, my exhuast sounded really loud (no resonator) before I installed my turbo. It sound pretty quite at cruise, but when the turbo spools up, it gets pretty loud .

And the mileage?

Anyone know what's up with that?

The milage could be due to the resonator, or it could be due to the exhaust leak, or some combination. It could also be a fluke (the right driving conditions, alignment of the planets, etc.). I had typed up a more lengthy explanation, but the stupid forum asked me to login again and lost it all. Let me know if you really want the long version, I just don't feel like typing it all back in right now.

its very possible that opening up the exhaust that little amount could do that for you. when i got my headers i went from about a 90-100 mi on a 1/4 tank to ~130. it wouldnt be the colder weather, because with colder weather your car will run a lot better, and will be a bit quicker, but you will wont get quite as good of gas mileage. my guess is that the resonator did help.

Just to clarify, it's the same 2.25 exhaust I had before except they cut out a small section and welded in the resonator. I noticed though that the tech fixed some welds at the muffler itself where there was a small leak. Wondering if poor welding before hand could have caused poor gas mileage.

If not that then how does a resonator improve mileage?

I hope it keeps up so I can make back some of that money that was wasted with the higher gas prices. I'm not complaining at all.
