Resonator

I just got a resonator installed into my 2.25 custom catback. I've been driving on the highway now long distances and the sound has been deafening so I really wanted to quiet things down. I'm writing this now because I feel like I just wasted 80 bucks on it. It is a little quieter but at WOT and more importantly at 75mph I can still hear the exhaust drone.

The muffler guys didn't have the magnaflow I wanted so they installed a different resonator. I wonder if that could be the problem, cheap materials = cheap results.

Any ideas?

I'm pissed too because that thing weighed like 30pounds

It depends on the resignator, the size of the resignator, the design of the resignator and the location of the resignator. The one that is on my center pipe is almost perfect. I can barly hear my exhaust from inside the car. Outside its loud though.

Maybe it depens on how long/big is it? Get rid of your muffler and get some nice and quite sleeper can.

it's about 14 inches long and about 4 inches in diameter

When I looked through it there were some bumps in a swirling pattern.
Don't get me wrong, it's is quieter but the car is still LOUD.

What type of resonator do you have Danno?

I dunno, its a no name one. What all do you have on your exhaust? Mine is a cat-back with a magnaflow muffler. I know the test pipes make them loud.

If I do that I will only end up completely redoing the catback with the way I feel right now. The noise around town isn't that bad but on the highway...

I've got headers which I know make the sound louder but I thought the resonator was supposed to suppress the sound. Maybe it is the can but it has a small tip on. I did not want a big 4inch tip muffler.

If you go here
http://www.ansaautomotive.com/SoundVideo/index.html

and click on the celica dyno you will see pretty much what the car sounds like.

Your headers are definatly what makes it louder, they eliminate one of the cats. Mybe try putting in 2 resignators.

I guess I'll have to live with it. That's more weight than I want to add since our cars are slow enough as is. I just ran out for some food and I guess the intake is loud also. Now that the exhaust is a little quieter I can actually hear it now. Time will tell...maybe I was expecting it to be too hush hush.

After some more driving this afternoon I think the resonator is beginning to work better. Is it something like a cat that needs to warm up and be used abit before it's contents actually work?

Got this info from How stuff works and it says that sound cancellation is not as much as would be expected.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/muffler5.htm

I'll leave that info for anyone else that might look up resonators.

location is important, too. When I fab my exhaust I'm going to have ONLY a resonator exactly where the stocker is now and a straight pipe out the back end. I figure if it's good enough for SRT4s, it's good enough for me

I got rid of my stock exhaust long ago so I have no idea where the stock resonator location would be. This one I installed right after the cat...well the tech did anyway.

OT but all this time and you still don't have an exhaust on? shame on you.
With all those intake mods you gotta get that air out!

And a word to the wise about that set up your looking at. It may be ok around town but trust me at 75 on the highway the rumble is unbearable.

If I wanted comfort I would have bought a Caddy

No shame. In fact, too many people do exhaust as a first or second mod, they get little to no gain and then stop modding altogether. They trust a mechanic or what some website tells them, they pay a retarded amount of money and then are disappointed when a stock engine doesn't perform much better Trust that I've spent that money wisely elsewhere on the car. Exhaust isn't even in the top 5 on the to-do list, really. I fabbed the DP a while ago and that was nice but an exhaust needs to be done right and I refuse to pay anyone for anything... pride? ego? whatever

The stock resonator is about 14" after the 2nd cat. I'll likely get a canister exhaust and put that where the res is now and then make the pipe as straight and open as possible. I'll stick with the 2.25" piping, too. SRTs aren't that loud and like I said, they only have one resonator and no exhaust. THEN if I turn out to be wrong about the whole no exhaust thing all I have to do is cut the end off and weld that bad boy on (or use those exhaust clamps)
