Question Engine miss?

See post #27 for helpful writeup.

When i try to pull a full throtle start from under 2,000 rpms i have an occational miss in the engine. Has anyone else had this happen in their 2003 oz's. Just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else. Usually happens in 2nd gear but here lately ive had it happen in 1st as well.

what are you talking about?

do mean the car is lagging/hesitating, or bogging, missfiring, or miss shift? i don't understand.

sounds to me like missfiring. My lancer did this after a nitrous run, the spark plug closed on itself, caused a short, thus missfiring. check the plugs. Like my dad used to tell me "Check under the hood first, jackass" He was always knowledgeable.

consider me cursed by satan when it comes to misfires. i've have gotten them on 3 seperate occassions since this past july. (twice in cylinder 4 and once in cyl 2).

check your spark plugs, coils packs, plug wires (note the condition of the insulation boot on the bottom...look for arcing), check all vacuum lines for leaks, make sure that you don't have a gunked up EGR system.

fuel lines, fuel rail, fuel injectors, fuel filter, fuel pump...these later ones are less likely to be your problem. check the small things first and work from there. any questions PM me.

thanks greg

can't find cause to my misfire: please help

you reminded me about this thread. check that one out. that's from when i had a misfire in july. it covers a lot of things to check...also, if you are unsure how to read your plugs once they are out...seach for threads started by me in the advanced search section. there is one thread with a link posted w/pics of how to read/diagnose them. keep us posted.

Since he mentioned it usually happens in the 2nd gear it probably has something to do with the load he is putting on his engine. I would assume:
-bad plugs
-wrong gap
-plugs not tightened
-wires
-boots
-coils

Also, if you are misfiring there should be a line (not solid) or bunch of black dots that would align in a straight line right on the white part of the plug. Watch out, if you misfire too much you can put too much heat to that cylinder and KABOOM.

hate to say it but, greg is right. check those plugs and other stuff mentioned in association with ignition and spark before you pull up in your drive way and hear change jingling in the motor cause cylinder temps went up too high and well...yeah you get it.

it's similar to the "bogging" associated with bad fuel pressure and flat spots. when i had the high RPM misfire the car would enter powerband around 3900 RPMs...at 4100 RPMs it felt like there was a 90% fuel cut. AFR went dead lean and the car would slam forward.

it was like you were pedal to the metal in a 5spd in 1st gear and took your foot off the gas quickly....not fun

EDIT: in a low RPM misfire the car hesitates to go. you'll hit the gas and feel no power. often, a shaking is associated with misfire as well so you might feel that too. likewise, you can hear it in the exhaust. sometimes it sounds like a farm tractor...yuck.

When one of the boots that connect the plug to the coil got shot on my car, OH MAN. Nothing over 3k rpm, no matter what gear. 15% throttle otherwise misfire. The plug in that cylinder was like snow, and my MPG was 400miles per tank! Don't even think about getting on the highways.
