Gotta take off the lower timing belt cover, and everything in the way of doing so. Part #6 in the first linked pic. Unplug #1, remove whatever you need to to remove #6. The sensor is behind it.
Here:

HUGE exploded view pic

HUGE pic of sensor.

Yep, sounds like a CPS for sure. It's not that it necessary "went out"...but that the contact points of the sensor and the plate that spins with the crankshaft are dirty. A tad bit of parts/brake clean cleaned it right up for me! Did it while I changed the T-belt actually.

Good luck guys!

Please help my 2003 lancer is having similar issue, a few weeks ago when my car was still working it drives fine but it would randomly shut itself down and now wont start, the most frustrating part is tat i didnt get any check engine light so in this case i started to randomly check all my parts, so far i've change the crank position sensor since this is what most people recommend but no luck, check all basic but everyting seemed fine.....n what **** me off is that this car only has 90xxx n already ***k up on me , i baby this car n maintenance it regularly...oh yeah not to mention i already have the dealer do the reflash on it n didnt fix the issue...if there's anyone that found a solution please do share it because im pretty sure theres alot of us right that are going through the same issue with our cars.

It sounds to me like you have a short somewhere either a ground or something with an intermitent connection. I would start by checking all the relays. Could very possible just shut down the car out of no where and eventually (as you have now found out) stop working all together. Check everything that pertains to the ignition system. If it was the fuel pump/ injectors then the car should have spit and sputtered before dying everytime so if it just shuts off then this strongly supports the spark is getting cut for some reason. Since you already changed the CPS I would check out the cam sensor and relays pertaining to the ignition system as well as all the connectors to the coils, sensors, etc. even check the ecu connectors to be sure those are not loose somehow.

aite i figure out what the problem was, one of the 12v relay in front was bad so i switch it with another one n my car started up( this was random didnt kno it was bad), didnt die on me no more, so guys that have similar issue check all ur fuse n main relay switch them out if u have some spare ones, before start buying expensive parts, n dont change any sensor unless u get a code, my didnt throw any code n i change my crank sensor fo no reason, thanks to those that respond
