Valvetrain rattle?

Lately I have been hearing a sort of ticking/rattling from what seems like my valvetrain when I am cruising in 2nd or 3rd gear around 2000-2200 rpms. Has anyone else ever heard this from theirs? I don't have any power mods so the engine is completely stock. I was wondering if maybe the lifters were adjustable and I just needed to have them adjusted or if its something else. If you have heard of this or heard it first hand and know what it might be please let me know! Thanks in advance!

Ok cool. I just wanted to make sure this wasn't a bad thing that I should have the dealership look at. It doesn't run weird or idle funny or anything its just super annoying when your cruisin through neighborhoods and you can hear it off the cars and houses. But if its normal, then sweet!

i get some noise as well--not noticable when i am driving but sometimes you can hear it at idle. you can always try using some lucas additive or some mystery oil in your car for your next oil change.

i also have used only synthetic oil and my car loves it. some people have said they have had problems with synthetic oil but i've had no issues with it for more than a year now through several oil changes.

Synthetic oil is only an issue when you go turbo.

Kinda hard to diagnose a "metally sound."

Mine is the same metally sound probably. It only happens in 2nd and 3rd gear at low rpms. It sounds like a lifter ticking against the valve stem or something like that. Its like a metal on metal tapping/rattling sound. That's why I asked if our lifters were adjustable cause that is what it soundslike it might be.

I used to use the sound as an indication of when my car needed an oil change. When it got really loud (ie. diesel truck loud) I'd get the oil changed.

Take your car. Open up the hood. Start the car. Rev the car using the throttle body cable in the engine. Hold it at 2k-3k RPM's. You should here the same noise. If this is what your hearing I believe it is just the valves and is normal. I have tried special oil additives that "quiet" valve tick and they work for a very short time and then they stop. When I get my Road Race Ported and Polished head I will have new guides, retainers etc. and the valves will have been cleaned and reseated etc. I am going to hope this takes care of that problem.

Lancer engine tick

I've got an 02 Mitsu Lancer ES. It's had ur described tick noise since I bought it. And the question about the valvetrain lifters, Well the lifters are hydraulic, so they're self adjusting. What I would say is if its just a tick than don't worry about it unless you start having more issues.
