I'm no Mitsubishi expert, but would there really be that much of a difference between any performance gain and sound from an 03 OZ compared to an 04 ES?

No, but fitment wise for a catback, there is a difference. I'm telling you, save a couple hundred bucks, just buy a muffler and have a shop make you a custom catback.

I got mine from Road Race when they had a big sale for $79. Ebay may be your only hope now.

Thats a great price. Yeah, try RRM or ebay. But on ebay, make sure it isn't a Greddy STYLE muffler. Cause some try to copy real ones by saying thats what style they are. It doesn't have to be for a lancer, just a universal one.

Also, you got lucky on those $79 mufflers from RRM. I got my magnaflow from them a long time ago and the muffler alone was $275. It'll be another $110 or so for the full catback from a shop

If he;s got the money, I'd say go for it. It's cheap for a new muffler and it will fit when welded on.

Here is a pic of mine welded up. Those are the only 2 pieces of pipe used. There is that small 2 inch piece to connect then together and the other pipe goes all the way to the cat. I also had them make custom mounting brackets.

Its tight, but it will fit.

I have an 02 oz rally, so as far as your fitment question (your 2" here and 2" there) I have no idea, but how it sounds, I can contribute...

I definitely like the sound. It isn't really loud like a lot of the exhausts out there, but has a nice full sound at the lower RPMs until you get to about 4 grand and it gets quite a bit louder. Not your typical fart-can exhaust If you are looking to turn heads with your exhaust, it is not for you
