CAI -vs- Ram Air
CAI -vs- Ram Air
Ok, I'm new here, but have been reading posts for about 3 weeks just to learn some things about my new car. I was considering buying a Cold Air Intake until I read that the HP gain from it would end up being like 3hp (from what some of the posts here say).
Also, I read a bit about a ram air setup, which would rob me of some low end torque, but will help me at higher speeds.
After looking at the stock airbox and setup, it looks like a good stock setup for a ram air. The opening comes out right were the grill opens up, letting plenty of air in while the car is moving.
Has anybody done anything to modify the opening of the stock intake, to allow more air to enter? It looks like a K&N replacement filter would be good, cause the way the air enters the snorkle, allows it to hit the air filter straight on....
If anybody has any advice, or has done anything with this idea please reply.
Also, anybody trying the K&N replacement filter, let me know what you found. I'm interrested in mods that won't void my warrantee, cause that's one of the reasons I bought a new car!

RMR's short ram utilizes the front air scoop. The heat shield has a hole cut in it to allow the scoop to shuttle air into the filter compartment. Out of all the intakes I've seen, RMR's is by far the best looking. The heatshield is held securely in place, and with the air scoop utilization, I place my money there.
Filters are not as critical as the MAS adapter it attaches to. You want one that goes from larger diameter and then funnels down. Keep that in mind when buying.

Good point. I have a question concerning the MAS adapters of the more popular intakes. Which one's do what Rock just described? I'm hoping that all of the popular brands, Injen, RRM, RMR, etc keep in mind funneling the MAS adapter.
INjen adapter is opposite. It sucks!
RMR is a ring on a flat plate (heat sheild.) You decide how good that works.
ROAD/RACE Short Ram uses a machined aluminum 4 1/2 inch adapter that funnels down to the shape of the MAS sensor opening.

There have been some solutions to your quest. First, some people found out that if you take the stock air box, open it from the top, and then pull the clips down and in the way, it will hold the box open, allowing more air to enter. Kind of like a "short ram", but all you have to do before going to the shop is close the box and bam, no warranty issues.
As for aftermarket intakes, I currently have the RMR one, which claims to have a decent hp gain. The Road///Race is very similar to this one too. These ones won't take torque away, and actually add some above about 3500 rpm, I think. As for the CAI, I like the idea, and I think they have similar gains, but I keep hearing about mounts breaking with those long tubes running down to the front bumper.

I have an AEM CAI, I took out the mesh cover on the left front part of the Lancer bumper so the Filter is exposed directly to the air coming in.....best of both worlds. Air comes in the openning to the filter where it's sucked in....Ram air and CAI at the same time

GO for CAI!! Its always better!! Just think of combustion if you went to school.. What do you need for combustion?.. Colder air?.. The colder the air, less dense, then faster combustion, faster acceleration.. Just think about it.. Brands dont really matter.. But i have an AEM CAS and its really sweet!
