~~~ Custom Short Ram Intake; Loud and Nasty :)
Loud and Nasty video of our custom short R intake.
VIDEO 1
VIDEO 2
the second video just gives you and idea of how loud it will be if you drive it below 2500 RPM what kinda volume to expect. its only 2500 and up under a load you will really here it.
[edit note: short video]
[Edit: one thing about the intake that is still chiving me a bit is the droning that goes on, having the CVT its something that will have to grow on you. sounds agressive enough but when its long and sustained. its different then what your use to. I guess thats what to add to the list of CVT Vs Manual eh blacksheep, another point for MT.]
Dyno will be done as soon as we finish our COLD Air Ram project and move the battery up a bit.
Enjoy
Hmmmm well I dont want to be known as someone who is talking a good game but not able to be able to do anything to back it up. when it comes to projects for my car. I have gone back and looked at alot of my posts and I seem to be doing a lot of typing in them.
A short ram is hardly something to be overly excited about. I mean its a Short Ram for heavens sakes. were you expecting smoke, maybe a little bit of flames.
lol Other then that, there are some here who just asked to be updated when things are added? if its too vague I applogize but what else can I do. As for other special projects, they are just that. When i have something final to show as always I post it when its done. I try not to hype everyone up with game talk. If you feel I have then let me know, its not my intention to miss lead on the forum. Additionally, I have been asked by some of those i work with to keep things confidential.
I can list the things I am working on, but pics will come in time. In a few posts in the RRM forum I mentioned I was looking into doing a short ram, as well as 2 variants of the short ram, one with a modified filter as well as one with a slightly longer tube. so a L-SRI is what i will call it. that will wrap a little behind the engine. The thinking behind the second one, was to utilize a functional vents that can be installed with ease later.
The one above was not aquired from RRM, it was aquired elsewhere, But the main purpose of most short rams in this situation is to by pass the medevial stock box restriction. The theory is small changes to the filter and the tube between the filter and the intake manifold and the manifold itself can yield slightly more power.
Why does this matter? to someone who is just putting on just one mod or two. probably nothing. But remember, as you add pre and post engine flow mods such as intakes on the front end and headers and exhaust systems on the back end. you signficantly add power overall across your other mods but increase engine efficiency.
For the longest time I didnt beleive it, i thought adding a Cat well that will give you 8 whp and thats it, blah. but then as I watched others and modded my own cars, it was amazing to see what adding a header can do to a cat +3 more horse, what an CAI can do to the header+2 and CAT +1. what a piggy back can do to a HEADER / CAT / INTAKE, and so one etc etc... Efficency is the answer.
I beleive i was asking on the forum if anyone had dynos and found out no-one did. so here i am doing it myself. before i started these I wanted to benchmark my results against those. but it appears I am going to be testing all these different applications myself. lol and spending a small fortune at the dyno. with pull after pull.
sigh Long post eh? lol ok done
I didnt want to be called Vague, drunk, yes, crazy sure... vague, if I seemd that way before, its certainly not done purposely, i try to be open
just ask
Cheers
FWIW, on my CVT I noticed a HUGE difference with the plastic intake tube (the one that goes from the front to the box) on and off. Car felt like it really sucked without that tube. Feels a lot better with.
Obviously that won't matter on the dyno, but you might want to try it for daily driving.
you know what, when it stops rainning here, I am going to take the car thru the local long tunnel here. its ****ing load even driving in the middle lane the sound is distinctly loud and since we are still running on the silent exhaust. Its amazing how load just an intake can be. I personally dont use SRI I perfer CAI in my other cars so this is my first time really driving day to day with this SRI. The EXTENDED SRI that i have running behind the engine for tests is quieter externally but louder internally due to it being right next to the firewall there. so vibration becomes more aparent.
If you dont have an intake yet, i suggest getting one, the performance can be felt. But the improved throttle will lead you to drive more agressivly on accleration. But if youkeep your control, you will notice maybe about a 2 or 3 gain in fuel economy. I got my econ down to 6.9 averge doing hyway driving. driving stable on highway. 5km Both directions up and down. its pretty flate. but wanted to confirm it wasnt due to wind direction or ground level.
The only thing that gets alittle annoying is the constant 2500 -2000 RPM level droning sound. Its a little odd at first, but grows on you. but to other cars they will think something odd is going on under that hood. unnatural lol
LOL you guys kill me, instead of looking at the posts in reverse order, in my original posts I mentioned "The one above was not aquired from RRM, it was aquired elsewhere, But the main purpose of most short rams in this situation is to by pass the medevial stock box restriction."
A SRI is generally a simple short ram pipe. either using some stock parts or removal of all stock parts to make the pipe a short as possible from the intake manifold mouth.
My SRI projects include, SRI extention pipes for behind the engine / with Air Dams
and a SRI with modified filter and stock piping and Mitsu will play ball, slight modification of the Intake manifold. I can use a RRM SHORT RAM, an EBAY one or one from my old honda ACCORD for that matter, its pretty easy to get the MAF sensor in place with a from scratch point of view. All of the above
