2nd Oil Change - Synthetic?
2nd Oil Change - Synthetic?
Hi.
It's almost time for my second oil change, just wondering if it's alright to go with Synthetic Oil yet, or should I wait?
My 2nd oil change will be @ 12,000 KMs.
Thanks.

if you can work out a good deal somewhere i suggest using mobil Extended performance, i have seen a rebuilt engine that runs on the stuff with my own eyes. frigging spotless on the inside. They even show it in their own case study on there page in Las Vegas Taxi's.
But hey to each his own, everyone will recommend one oil or another. but with what i seen, I was amazed. its the only reason why i pay that extra dollar for it. But i also worked out a deal with a local shop to get the stuff for the same cost as regular Mobil 1

So theres no harm in switching before the 12000 service? I'm at 2500km right now and was thinking bout it for my first oil change but the service manager tried to dissuade me into waiting until 12000km.
Did he say why? I've never heard an argument about waiting. Hell, according to the owner's manual, the car is broken in WELL before 12000km...
He said it would be better served if i waited until the engine was "fully broken in at 12000km" and he said the standard oil was viscous enough to get the engine through a winter until then.
A. What the Hell does he mean by "better served" ???
B. What makes 12,000 km "fully broken in" ???
C. I'm sure standard oil is "viscous enough." But since I plan on using synthetic for the life of my car, I figured "might as well start early."
D. Questions A & B are rhetorical, so don't feel bad that you can't answer them.

Take fifty '08 Lancers. Religiously change the oil every 7500 miles with Mobil 1 5W-20 synthetic.
Take another fifty '08 Lancers. Change the oil once every 33,000 miles. Use straight 30 weight oil, like you might put in a tractor.
At the end of 100,000 miles compare the performance and any bills for repairs.
I seriously doubt that you would see any significant differences between the two groups of cars.
Maybe if you regularly track or otherwise race the cars, or if you frequently rev the crap out of the motor, the 1st group would fare better. Maybe if you start to extend the mileage to 200K or 300K, some differences will show up. If you take the engines apart, you might notice the motors from 1st group look better. However, at 100K miles, I seriously doubt you will find the motors of the second group breaking down in noticeably greater numbers. Most any oil you buy off the shelf is going to do a decent job of lubricating the motor under normal driving conditions.
When I met my wife she was driving a 94 Toyota pickup. It had just over 100K miles. Knowing my wife, I'd be surprised if the oil was changed more than three times in that interval. After we got together, I made it a point to change the oil about every 5K miles (usually Quaker State 10W-30). Sometimes it was more like 10K. That truck now has over 300K miles. Over the past four years it has been used as a farm truck, and it has only moved about 4K miles. Last summer I changed the oil for the first time in those four years, and the stuff that came out looked foul. The body has lots of rust, the seats are torn, and it has other issues. The motor still runs like a charm.
I put Mobil 1 in my Lancer, and I'll change it every 7500 miles. I'll save the receipts. If anything does go wrong with the motor in the first 100K miles, then I'll expect Mitsu to cover it. I hope to drive the car beyond 100K miles, maybe pass it on to my son, and I'm an ****-retentive kind of guy--so I buy the Mobil 1.
Ignoring the warranty issues, I could probably send my 9-year-old into Pep Boys every 15K miles, and tell him to buy 5 quarts of whatever oil he thinks looks cool. I am pretty confident that would make no difference at 100K miles compared to what I'm doing by using Mobil 1 5W-20 every 7500 miles.
I like working on my car. When I do the oil change it gives me a chance to check out other things--look for leaks, inspect the ball joints and CV boots, etc. I don't mind spending $25 for an oil change (synthetic) compared to $15 (organic oil). (Those are do-it-yourself prices, with filter.) I can do the oil change in less than half an hour, and that includes time to get my tools and clean up. That's less time than it would take me to hit a Jiffy Lube. Given the placement of the oil filter and drain plug, Mitsu made it very easy to do an oil change on this car.
So, the bottom line: If you want to use synthetic, then go for it!
