Based upon the previous versions the WORKS filter has a greater surface area, lighter weight, outflows all others tested (OEM, foam-based and others reusable elements) and captures particles that are measured in microns.

One of the key differences is the fact that WORKS uses cotton fabric with even sized openings. This allows for proper filtration while in use. Others typically use foam and/or a cotton gauze--both of which have uneven openings and have the potential for letting larger particles sneak past the filter element.
i have both and i don't see how you can say the works is lighter weight. part of it is made of metal. it is a high quality and well made filter. i can't exactly say it is light on weight compared to OEM or K&N

I'm going to now add what I can to this discussion and maybe it will help. I currently own a 2009 Lancer GTS and I did install the K&N replacement air filter. Now as a previous K&N customer I have come to love their ability to create a product that outperforms your basic $10 or less air filters you get from your local auto parts store. HOWEVER, I was really disappointed in the filter they released for the 09 Lancers. Now I only had the lightweight RRM crank pulley installed prior to changing filters and I'll say that the throttle response was great and my lancer had a little more pep to it. After installing the K&N filter and running it for a few days though, unfortunately, the quick response of my car was gone. Now I gave the filter the benefit of the doubt that maybe my car had to readjust to the new air/fuel ratio. Didn't matter in the end. Throttle response became sluggish, it was louder (like it would be if you had a cheap ram air intake installed), and gains in the upper band were not even noticable. I have since reinstalled the air filter in my car that it came with (since the car only has 5k miles on it) and the car performs better now. Take this for what it is. It's just my personal experience from buying a K&N air filter. I would not recommend K&N to anybody for the 09 Lancers.

Ya that's what I kept thinking too. It just seemed weird that it was producing a louder sound with only a replacement air filter. Before completely giving up on the K&N air filter I reinstalled the original air filter the car came with and it went quiet again. After this I had a "WTF!" moment. So I reinstalled the K&N filter exactly the same way as I installed the factory air filter even using the supplied air filter cage to maintain the same outer dimensions and once again...it was louder and sluggish. Of course this could just be a chance of bad luck and maybe it's just the filter as I haven't attempted to return it and try a replacement. I was just adding my opinion on the K&N air filter from what I've experienced. Believe me I was surprised it didn't meet my expectations because I've always used their products.

I'd been using K & N filters for some 30 years until the Lancer came along. In the past we noticed good gains with K & N's on various types of vehicles but that ended with our 95 Montero, it didn't like K & N's. We didn't notice much improvement at all when we went from paper elements to K & N's and we didn't like the oiling problems either. We tried the K & N drop-ins in both the Oz Rally and the Evo and we're not impressed.

Now when we added the WORKS drop-in, it was like the old K & N days, we actually felt something! And we didn't just try them for a few days either, we worked with this for over a year changing between paper, WORKS and K & N, plus three different drivers.

Our original WORKS filter is still in service and its one of the first filters WORKS produced many years ago. The K & N was put into a DD Oz and failed over a year ago! It was being used in a higher than normal dust condition, but even with proper cleaning and oiling it developed a small hole in the filter material and was retired.
