Cone Filter

If u look at the evo x forum, they have a thread where all they did is remove the box with the flatbed filter and stick a cone in the pipe and it works. Do u think this is applicable with our cars and how do we go about this? And no im not talking about putting in a CAI or SRI, just an actual cone filter

That is a cone filter, they simply didn't replace the stock pipe (more or less).

You would also need to fabricate a mount for the MAF sensor

Actually I think what we could do is
1) Take the filter box out,
2) Cut the MAF sensor holder off the filter box.
3) Attach the cone to one end
4) Hook it up to the rubber tubbing.

However the filter will be closer to the engines heat.

Perhaps then I could make a shield for it?

If you want go cutting oem parts and find a cheap route, might as well just do what this guy is doing.

It will be very close to the engine, closer than the SRI because they come with a bent tube which takes the filter away from the engine. For an Evo X however that would be a good idea because the battery is relocated in the trunk and there is plenty of room at the front part of the hood.
Look at pic (taken from the Evo-x subforum)

I was just wondering can we put the battery in place of the airbox and make a custom SRI whose cone stays where the battery used to be?
Would that be a good idea or the battery would get hot back there?

Battery should be fine. Heat shield couldn't hurt, but I doubt you'll melt it.

You say the car was modified for better weight distribution. If they start to ask any questions, just roll your eyes and say "clearly you don't understand how cars work" and then walk away.
