It will cost you $20 to get the information on almost free modifications.

Try bypassing the throttle body coolant lines. Back out the MAF mixture screw. Remove the P/S and A/C belt. Remove about 100lbs of misc. weight from your car. Sell the heavy stereo and rims for some light rims. Put the 50lbs of school books in your house. Put the wife/girlfriend on a diet? Remove the resonator at the end of the intake in the fender well. Punch a hole through the center of your catalytic convertor(s) (both of them). Install the stock camshaft from a pre 2000 fed spec emissions Mirage. Steal some parts from the local speed shop....

I think DIM was shooting for somewhat real performance...albeit there is a limit to what free can get you, without breaking any state or federal laws...not that that has stopped me in the past...

You can always try cutting a hole in the floorpan and doing the fred flintstone thing, sticking your feet out and running.

cheapest mod which costs nothing.....is to drill holes in the air box before the filter, drill them in the half side closest to the front bumper and youll get more air and alittle more power.

Does the stock stereo weight that much more than an after market deck? Or are you just talking about those people who put huge sound systems into thier car and then complain about performance?

well...a cheap mod huh?

I have a SUPER cheap mod you can make, but don't get mad if you don't get the results you want. Check it: goto the nearest screen door on your house, cut out a fitting amount for the air filter, toss the stock one in your room to save the .25 lbs for better take-off, and listen to that 4-banger purr...Heheh, okay, but naw, do the screen door thing- you'll open the engines lungs...get it? open?! screen door?!, Hahaha, tell me what happens.

Mainly talking about the people who put in the monster sub woofer boxes with 2 18" speakers (box made of particle board and covered with carpet) a couple amps etc, etc...

But I have heard that most aftermarket decks are a good 1lb to 4lbs lighter than stock units depending on brand/model and power.

There is probably a good 20-30lbs of stuff you can take off the Lancer without compromising safety, comfort, noise level, practical use etc, etc. For example I bet the evap emissions canister (if under the rear of your car opposite the muffler side) will have a heavy metal box that contains it top and bottom...the bottom is useful but the top is worthless and just adds weight...that thing is thick too (about 6lbs for mine with the bolts)...give me a Lancer and within a week I'd probably find all the easily removable items that give extra weight and serve no real purpose.

Sure you could just take off your cats but what about the gaping holes in the exhaust system? Probably should mention to get those RoadRace test pipes for 70~ a piece to replace the factory cats.
