How many cats?

how many people have put their lancers on a lift and counted the numbers of cats in their exhaust?.. if so how many cats do we REALLY need in order to still be in compliance with US specs?.. how many can we remove and how many leave installed? Thanks.

I have.

There's one, just downstream of the manifold.

There's two actually, one in the exhaust manifold and one in the exhaust stream. You need both to definitely pass emissions.

Yep, there's two

I've passed emission with only one cat though. I deleted the first cat with RRM's header and the cell delete o2 extension thingy took care of the rest tricking my computer into thinking it's emission safe.

A good mechanic might catch ya, but take it to a small shop and I think you're safe. If you're worried, leave him a sixer of beer on the passenger seat...

Yea, for some reason i looked at a muffler shop manual for lancers and it had a diagram that posted 2 cat converters. The second cat was located at the end of the exhaust pipe and connected to the muffler. I looked at my exhaust and there was no such thing. Weird huh?

---Edit---

I already know theres 2. The first one is located inside the exhaust manifold. When buying a header you can still pass emissions with a header with the o2 bung hole. Test pipes are illegal on street roads. Off road use only.
