Question Would an oil cooler work?

Once again, I skim catalogs and ask my fellow board members if something will work. There's very little information on the B&M site, but here's an oil cooler for $110. Would something like this help a Lancer? I gotta figure that cooler oil is always a good thing.

Product info: Import engine oil cooler most imports with 20mm x 1.5 or 3/4"-16 oil filter threads

Question of the day - will Hobie be the 1st to answer me with the perfect definitive answer like he usually does?

Well, yeah. But I meant in general. They boast adding life to your engine and whatnot. I'm not worried about frying my oil, but it's supposed to help. I was just wondering what people think.

There are several factors that would ddetermine the amount this would help:
1) Geographic Location- it would assist some body in Texas more so than it would some body in Maine.
2) How hard you drive your car
3) What your driveing conditions are (stop and go or HWY)
4) other mods you have done (or like JV said MODS you have not done)

I believe it will help, but it is a bang for the buck question. The more mods you have the more help it will be. Watch out for mounting location and keep in mind any future mods you may be adding.

Good luck and let us know how much of a difference you notice.

Well, if I get it, it'll be down the road a ways. I was just wondering.

No matter what, an oil cooler is always a good mod. Think of it this way: Car manufacturers don't put ANYTHING on a car that they don't absolutely need there. added weight, added cost, and added matinience are 3 things manufacturers don't want to deal with.

Advantages of an oil cooler: More oil. Plain and simple, more oil in the lubrication system of an engine means greater potential. (as long as it's controlled etc. can't just pour in an extra quart)
Cooler oil means better engine cooling in general, and less chance of oil breaking down as a result of overheating.

There are more good reasons, but those are just the 2 I've got right now, off the top of my head. Either way, it's a good investment. It might be "overkill" in the minds of many, but so are most mods to normal people

are you going to keep modding your car after 200,000 miles or just buy a new 1 ??

i wouldn't worry with it for now. oil coolers are necessary if you heat the oil up to such a temperature that the oil begins to break down. the condition that generally demands an oil cooler is a turbo running high boost. even running medium boost up to about 20 or so PSi, i wouldn't worry with a cooler.

Get an oil catch can to satisfy your oil prep fetish and call it good.

An oil cooler is going on my car. I will have to ask my shop exactly which one it is and hopefully I can get a part number for you if it is different than the one posted. I will be seeing some pretty high boost so I consider it to be pretty essential. Otherwise I agree with what everyone else has said.

how high of boost are you seeing that you NEED an oil cooler? you probly should get a tranny cooler instead, or just do both while your at it

the engine will most likely be seeing 20psi at the most, but certainly not daily. Another great advantage of the oil cooler is that you get more oil capacity and you are able to run a bigger oil filter, opposed to that tiny little stock thing.

I don't know why a tranny cooler would be more important than an oil cooler. Oil, especially on a tc engine, sees a lot more temp and abuse, one reason why it is changed so frequently. Tranny coolers are only really useful on automatic trannies, especially in high horsepower situations. unless you are road racing or towing something there is generally really no reason to have a tranny cooler for a manual. If anyone is going to run some high horsepower on an auto though, then I would suggest it if you have the funds.
