Drop in mileage after K&N Drop in Install

So I just upgraded my air filter to a K&N air filter part number 33-2105. Same style, just with K&N and my mileage has dropped significantly. I usually don't drop below 29 but I am constantly dipping into 26, 27 on the freeway going like 70. This is with the same style of driving. Perhaps my MAF hasn't adjusted yet? It has only been 40 miles.

That doesn't sound right, try resetting the ecu.

Do I do that by disconnecting the battery for about 10 minutes?

So I did it and it likes to now randomly cut out at stop lights. I know this will eventually subside, but why is it dying??

To reset, disconnect battery for 15-20 min, then reconnect the battery, start the car and let it idle for 15-20 min to let the ecu relearn.

Yes... I would let idle for 20.

Also mileage drop;
Have you checked to see if your spark plugs are OK?
I wouldn't think you'd have a noticeable change in mpg either way with this overpriced filter.
I didn't with mine.

On the other hand though;
Put a cold air intake on and now you'll see a couple more mpg.

I'm too poor for that right now. :P I wish I could afford one, but not quite yet. I'm thinking that the MAF is still taking time to adjust to the new amount of airflow that the K&N is permitting in comparison to the air filter of unknown origin that was ran for 30,000 miles. >_>

I am definitely due for an oil change so I will need to address that. Also as far as spark plugs, they're definitely dirty. I seafoamed the engine without changing them. That's probably not good. I am currently running the Ngk Ix Iridium/Spark Plugs. However I am tempted to get the NGK Laser Iridiums but I don't know if it'll be worth it or if I should just stick with the same type.

Your thoughts??

If the ecu reset did not work, definitely check the spark plugs. No need for Laser Iridiums. Go to your local auto parts store and get the: NGK Part# BKR5E-11

The ECU relearns, the MAF doesn't--it just sends the info to the ECU. Reset the battery as you stated earlier...that should do it. Unless you leaning on the pedal more--you shouldnt have a problem--the car should be running leaner with the filter--so as long as its not too lean--you will not see a need press harder on the pedal to get the same performance.

How could you possibly know that your mileage has dropped, if you've only driven 40 miles?

Ha good point!

You've got a second for NGK Part# BKR5E-11.
They are the V-Power ones.
They're cheap, work great and allot less restrictive then plat. or irid. plugs.
I.E. hotter spark!

My guess is that the lack of power maybe your plugs.
And it's worth replacing them 'cause it'll only cost you like $12 if you do it yourself.
But for sure reset the ecu and fallow learning instructions if you haven't already.

To piggyback on the OP's question: Do you need to reset the ecu after a CAI install?

I actually don't have a CAI, I just have the K&N air filter.

I have a mileage reader and I used to average 32.5. It's gone down a little bit but I'm going to let it learn a bit more before I get back with a more accurate figure and after more data has been fed into the ECU.

Looks like I was running the BKR5EIX-11's, which are not V-Powered but Iridium. I'm not sure if that makes a difference though. Does it matter though? I thought the manufacturer called for the iridum plugs?
