driver side fuel injector noise?

i have a 2009 lancer es and iam getting this werid ticking noise out of the far left injector. i go to school for auto tech at ranken tech in st.louis so i had my teacher take a look at the noise. (hes a nissan master tech for his day job). we got out a auto stethoscope to test the injectors. 3 of the injectors sound the same, the injector in question sounds a little lounder and the pluse seems a little off. i still havent tested the injector but the car is at 29k miles. sould i get into the valve cover and check the valve clearance?

well if you put the stethoscope on the injectors and #4 was different, then it most likely the injector, not the valve set, no? It doesn't hurt to check the valve set, but be prepared to pay a big buck or a lot of work to get them set right.

You aren't aware of what is involved in setting the valve clearances on these, do you?

1. Measure exactly how much the valve clearance is out by.
2. Remove both camshafts
3. Calculate the thickness of the newly installed valve tappet through the following equation.
A: thickness of newly installed valve tappet
B: thickness of removed valve tappet
C: measured valve clearance
Equation
Intake valve: A = B + [C − 0.20 mm (0.008 inch)]
Exhaust valve: A = B + [C − 0.30 mm (0.012 inch)]
NOTE:
The valve tappet ranges 3,000 − 3,690 mm (0.1181 − 0.1453 inch) and has 47 types per 0.015 mm (0.0006 inch). The thickness below a decimal point is stamped on the reverse side of the valve tappet.

4. Put it all back together and see if you got it right!

Good luck.
