Is My Clutch Slipping? What Do I Do?

2002 Lancer OZ
147k miles

Hey guys I noticed this problem getting worse and worse. When Im on the highway, in slow traffic in 3rd or 4th gear when I try to accelerate my rpms shoot way up by my speed doesnt increase much at all. I have to just lightly press on the gas and slowly creep my way up to speed. It seems to be getting worse and worse and happening more and more. For instance, when Im in 5th gear going 60, if I want to increase my speed I have to lightly press on the gas or else the rpms will just shoot up and it will be like the clutch inst even engaged.

Does this sound like my clutch is "slipping". Is there a way to adjust the clutch to fix this problem, or do I have to replace it? Anyone have a link to a how to?

Thanks

It sounds like it might be. Try this. Put the handbrake on and put it in 4th. Try to start accelerating like you would if it was in 1st, with out killing the car. If you can completely release the clutch pedal without car moving or stalling, you clutch is shot. As far as how-tos, I'm sure there are, but replacing a clutch isn't so simple as take the old clutch out and putting the new one in. The whole transmission has to be dropped.

Hello, not trying to jack your thread but I'm having my trans rebuilt and I figured a new clutch wouldn't hurt, my evo8 is all stock so really don't need a racing clutch, so I found this clutch kit, any advice?????

yea sorry to say but your clutch is gone and like saul said it is not a easy 1hr job. im surprised you didnt smell it. if you dont know how to work on cars i wouldnt try it, cause you have to either pull the engine and tranny together or tear apart your whole driver side, strut, axle, hub all that to get it out. sorry to hear and you can google it and get somewhat informed on how to do it,it took me and my brother about 8hrs to do one in a cavalier.

Thanks guys, I am pretty mechanically inclined so I would like to tackle the job myself if I can find a good writeup or get my hands on a manual.

So just to be clear. There is no way to adjust the clutch to fix the problem correct? I need to replace the whole thing?

Thanks

No way to adjust it I am aware of. Its a hydraulic clutch so no cable to adjust and the slave cylinder is internal and is also non adjustable.
