Question '04 Lancer ES - What's the best synthetic oil?

Hi,

I've been thinking of switching my '04 Lancer ES's oil to Castrol Synthetic over my current no name synthetic oil.

Anyone recommend any specific one?

I'm looking for prolonging engine life and longer times between oil changes.

I add a half container of lucasoil with every oil change. Good stuff to use with any oil: they make both synthetic and non-synthetic versions.

I've been using Mobil 1 since bought my car new. 92,000 miles now and doesn't burn any oil and runs great.

Personally like Castrol but synthetic is synthetic. I used to use the Lucas oil treatment too but started to run Engine Restore (similar to Lucas but much more effective). Im at 180K miles and running perfectly.

Dont use mobil 1 it dosnt have the zddp s your turbo needs for ware. i would also not seggest on roil purple it has phosperos but know zink. i have been using valvoline 20w-50 vr1 synthetic. its been working well but as far as specs go I'm thinking about Lucas.

specs you should look for

zinc =1300 ppm
phosphorus = 1300 ppm
moly = 1000 ppm
calcium = 1250 ppm

i would not go lower than this as far as what i would run.
one lab write up i have used http://540ratblog.wordpress.com/
i just don’t have the like to the others i have used. i hope this helps. Force performance has a list of oil that they suggest for a good start. remember your oil is your cars life blood and it will kill your turbo if you don’t have the right oil. that’s what happened to me and royal purple engine oil. I also used royal purple trans oil i will never use royal purple ever again for anything. i would not use it in my lawn mower. royal purple in the trans f_ed up my shift points, and was hard to shift into third. I then switch it out with bg syncro shift(this stuff kicks IMO). the bg stuff works great and the shifting is better than it was before the royal purple. As for the engine do your your home work its worth looking in to, a new turbo is 2gs and some web crawling will get you some good results and maybe some peace of mind. hope this helps and say no to the 1 and purple they are crap.

I personally use Royal Purple transmission fluid and when I made the switch to Royal Purple I noticed a big improvement in smoother shifts and gears don't hang up when I'm slamming gears anymore. I totally recommend their products, and for $20 a qt for transmission fluid, it better live up to the full potential that they are charging for it. As far as oil goes, once again, I currently switched over to Royal purple for motor oil. I only made the switch over because it was on sale for $5 a qt, but as soon as I get my motor built and fix all my oil leak issues. I will definitely be going with Amsoil 20W-50

I think that the oil you would use depends on your situation and driving habits amongst other things . Simply put..if you don't have a performance car or don't drive much you may not need a so called higher end more expensive oil.

I hear you man. Quick question though, if my turbo is the same one on an evo and they suggest Mobil 1...why would they suggest Mobil 1?

My mistake I guess I missed that. Probably your best bet would be to go with what's suggested.

Just some FYI, I have had my 04 ES for over 10 yrs, and always used Mobil 1 Full Syn 10-30.

I am at 135,000 and the oil is clean and engine runs smooth as silk. When I took off my valve cover to replace the gasket last year, everything still looked brand new.

Google search, "Forced Performance Oil PDF" and read it.

And if you don't believe that, I snapped a crank in a stock Evo IX with 50k miles on it while exiting a coffee shop parking lot at 1000rpm. The oil? Mobil1. That stuff doesn't have enough zinc in it to run a chainsaw for five minutes.

Read that PDF from FP. You'll see one of the best oils there is under $5. It doesn't matter if your oil's synthetic: it matters how often you change it and how much zinc (ZDDP) is in it.

I do oil changes every 3k, don't care if a longer interval can be used I like to keep things nice and clean. Man, for the price of it, you'd think that Mobil1 would have a better composition.
