do AEM cold air intake without replace the exaust is ok?

I plan to install an AEM cold air intake to increase the torque for my OZ, but I do not want to replace the full exaust like header or catback. I just want to know the cold air intake will work or not? how many lb-ft will increase??
somebody told me he install the AEM CAI without change the exaust, the torque is decrease.the car is slower than before, is it true??

i think its the other way around, u gain torque from any intake mod, but exhaust mods will lower your torque but increase your highend. yes u can put on a CAI even wihtout the muffler. it will work just fine.

I have just the AEM CAI and it works fine. Definite gains. Very worth the price.

thanx guys, and how many lb-ft will increase?? or can you feel the change very much? the staff told me it can increase 20% power, in that way, the torque is almost same with eclips?

Going off AEM's dyno numbers, you'll see 7.2 ft-lbs at peak. The single largest gain (3500 rpm) is over 13 ft-lbs. I think 20% was a high estimate.

As for the butt dyno, you'll love it. Once you hit 3500 rpm, the car just GOES. The day I test-drove it with the CAI, I chirped the tires going from 1st to 2nd (something I had previously only done in a '69 Camaro). I love my CAI and can't imagine taking it off.

As for matching the Eclipse, I looked up the dynos on AEM's site. A Lancer with CAI and a 4-cyl Eclipse with CAI . According to AEM, the Lancer had 122 ft-lbs to the Eclipse's 139 ft-lbs after install.

it is cooool man,I will order it right now.
BTW,the lancer torque is 130lb-ft right? after DO the CAI, it should be 140lb-ft but not 122, I think they make some mistakes!(AEM's dyno)

FYI - You're looking at torque measured at the flywheel. The numbers I used are measured at the wheels. Generally, from friction and such, there is a 15% difference from the flywheel to the actual output where the rubber meets the road.

For example:
Flywheel HP for stock 2002 Lancer - 120 hp
Wheel HP for stock 2002 Lancer - roughly 103 hp
Peak WHP after CAI install - roughly 107 hp

Flywheel torque - 130 ft-lbs
Wheel torque - roughly 110
Peak torque after CAI - roughly 117

That's just a general formula, as all cars and dynos are slightly different (as seen in that AEM's numbers are all 4-5 higher).

No problem.

PS - all this CAI talk made me a little antsy on the way home. God, that thing is fun. I can't wait to get more mods to make things even better.

Thumbs up Getting my AEM CAI next week!

I've been reading lots of posts and I finally decided to go with the AEM Cold Air Intake and I can't wait to install it. Does it take long and is it pretty complicated? Eventually I'll go with a new muffler as well. Anyone know of the best to get for the least money?

just a small side note: if you plan on using cold air, please run a bypass valve for those rainy days., i live in cali and i had a bypass and sold it cuz i figured it never rains that much here. well, just to let you know..two days ago, my engine suffered hydrolock when i ran over a puddle and now my lancer is in the dealer undergoing intense service which hopefully won't run heavy $$$$.

Z_Lancer_Man - easy install. My cousin and I did it in no time at all. As for the muffler - depends on what you're looking for. I got a used RRM axleback to increase my low-end torque. You can either do that or get a catback for better top-end.

Boba - my heart goes out to you. Living in Ohio and having no bypass, hydrolock is my big fear. Everytime I hit a puddle, I'm thinking about it. Best of luck.

Yeah, I've thought about getting a bypass valve. Its been raining here in Utah a lot the last couple of days and thats my biggest fear of getting water sucked up. Does anyone know where I could get a cheap/used bypass valve?
