Why so slow?
i had a similar experience. my buddy and i both have 5 speeds.
mods (at the time):
me: intake, header
him: intake, header, cat back exhaust
when we would race to test out our mods i would always get him. he'd be at my back bumper. i know it sounds weird since i had fewer mods at the time but everyone was saying it was because my buddy's car was very free flowing. basically when your car breaths really well you lose a little low end. keep in mind also that it was only 1/4mile races, not highway or long stretch. if we would've raced long distance i'm sure he would have caught up and passed me. when you install a header and cat back combo your going to lose a little low end, but you gain very good high end. i'm not sure if you noticed, but with a stock header and exhaust lancers take forever to get from 80mph to 90mph. it basically drags/stalls. now after you install these, it keeps going like normal. nice and quick, because you gain high end. its good to have some back pressure.

A good, proper header doesn't lose low end power, unless a 4-1 header. On a lesser displacement vehicle, an intake will lose a bit of power on the low end.
I had an OBX header on my LS coupe, and I didn't lose any power comparing to stock powerband. By no means, I ever thought OBX made the best products. I improved my low and midband and little on the top end since I had stock exhaust.
As for brand name intakes, I'm not really sure it really matters. I had an ebay special for my stock S13 240sx . . . had a bit on the mid to topend, but the car was really a beater on its last leg.
Also: do both of you had different rim size? If you have 17's and he's still stock 15's, the 17's will launch slower.

No same rim size, also another question, when i get to 4th gear on the interstate, the car will be real high RPM but then you hear them drop. Almost like....(well if you where here i could make the sound LOL) but anyway it starts out a little higher then immediatly drops. I guess this is good b/c the rpms drop a bit but it also looses top end or does it?
so, when is it good to install a test pipe? you guys are making me want to put my cat back on... just recently i swaped out my CAI to SRI.. it was great at first cause i gained back the strong pull of the line... but then lost it in the high end... so i went back to CAI cause i really like the pull in the high end.. now if i take off the test pipe and have my CAI in.. u think i even out the low end and high end probs? or just leave it as is...??? no exhaust by the way... pure stock for now...
Kelspar: Yeah, I agree with what most people are saying. I think your CAI and Header are loosing you some low-end torque.
After installing my AEM CAI, and my RRM header, I noticed a tiny loss of low end power. It definitely picks up after 2500 rpm's though. Once you add other mods, this should go away. It's only temporary.

No when i am on interstate (not related to racing) and i hit forth gear it starts as high rpms but then drops. Bear with me...lol VROOOOOMMM(higher)......VREEEEEMMMMM(lower) and drops from about 4.5-5k to around 4 or below.......like it is an immediate lose in top end, i also havent noticed to much gain in top end. i am dropping the cat back on as we speak ill be back after i finish.......
Well just finished putting the cat back on (not to be confused with cat exhaust), and its much quiter, letting it idle after i reset the battery. Hope this will restore low end a bit, going to race my friend again, also i did my homemade ground kit a few days ago, hope this will help smooth out my idle.
