so just reading this thread im getting a feeling that shifting higher give us better gas mileage in a n/a lancer? thats exciting........

 

Remember just because you're shifting at a higher RPM you shouldn't be going "faster". What gives you the better mileage is that you're not pushing the pedal very far in while you're getting up to that RPM. It's still slow, and I still feel like I'm waiting forever to shift.

Deza, yeah that's how I calculate my mileage. I used to keep a log and calculator, but it got tedious. Now I just estimate (i.e. 311 miles on 11.3 gallons is roughly 28 mpg) Hope I'm somewhere accurate on that.

we have a 13.2 gallon tank, only 10 gallons register on the gas gauge, so when the warning light comes on, i think its 3 - 4 gallons till empty... don't try this without a friend!

 

Or at least a gas can in your trunk, like I did while driving to Arizona!

 

Well, I have to say all your guys' advice worked. I completed the 10 hour trip yesterday and my MPG was great. I drove 357.1 miles before my gas light came on. When I got gas, I replaced 10.7 gallons, which comes out to about 33.3 MPG. I drove the whole way between 67-72 MPH. I'm also testing what effects the lower elevation I'm at now (~650 ft above sea level) has on my MPG compared to back home (~3500 ft. ) The car already seems to respond better down here and regular gas is 87 Octane here compared to 85 octane at the higehr elevation.

I wonder if my gas mileage would get worse if I lived at a higher elevation. I'm at about 1000 feet.

 

I have been shifting at ~3500 RPM. When I'm cruising, I make sure my RPMs are lower than 3000, so I usually go about 40 in 4th gear. Sucks for accelaration, but is good for gas mileage.

About the 85 octane gas. I will only buy it at Chevron or Shell, since if I have to get such low octane I at least want the highest quality. Fortunately I've never had any problems pinging.

crap. i filled up. got 23.5 mpg. i didnt drive any different than i usually do. perhaps i jsut suck at life

Try driving 110+ mph for 6 hours

itsthedriver, maybe you're just a little heavy on the pedal? Try using cruise control on the highway, that usually helps people gain at least a couple mpg.
