Overdrive Question

I have a 2002 Lancer ES. It's an automatic. Yeah, my boyfriend has been wondering where the overdrive thing is at. I looked through the manual but it doesn't say anything. Anyone want to answer my question? Thanks.

Wait ... I'm a chick so I don't know much about my car but yeah, I use the D for driving. Is it like, some automatic overdrive or something or am I just driving on the wrong letter or thing?

you have to use 3 instead of D, but I do not know if you can easily change to 3 or D while driving unlike the O/D switch. I do that with rental cars without any problems

so 3 is D witout the overdrive rite?...dat means i gotta pull it all the way back then...so if i use 3 instead of D would it do any harm to the transmittion...dont want my dad to bytch when it gets busted hehehe

Use the 3 to drive like, in slow mode? And use the D if I want to drive in overdrive? I'm a confused little girl! Which is better around town? I drive pretty fast. Yeah, I don't want to F up my car!

3 is for a little more acceleration but lose a great deal of power over 60 mph . . . motor runs out of gears.

With D, it's 4th gear that the auto can use to pull more efficient power.

Have you ever driven a 3 spd auto neon or chevy cavy? Sprint decent within the first 2 gears, but it runs out of power trying to merge onto the interstate. Also, I do believe the geo metro sedan has a 3 spd auto too.

Use 3 to eat up more gas. 4 spd is always better.

Example: which is better? a 3 spd, 4 spd, or 5 spd manual. A 5 spd will always win overall in performance and mpg.

So D is better? And when you say that 3 loses a "great deal of power over 60", does it mean that its like, weak but sorta fast? Kinda contradicts but I hope you know what I'm saying.

Oooh. Waste more gas. Why would I want to waste more gas again?

in my auto when i race i shift from L > 2 > 3 > D
that yields better times than just the normal D and my tranny is just fine plus warrenty, so whatever

over 60 mph, a 3 doesn't have enough gear ratios left to stretch out the powerband. With O/D, the motor has 1 more gear to pull more power and spd. Basically, it will take you forever to sprint 60-80 mph in 3rd.

It's like a manual when you leave 1st gear too long. There is no power to pull.

When you leave it in 3, the car's computer is set to dump more gas for TQ.

i guess you can do that but it will ruin the transmission, it is not a tiptronic or sportronic where you can do the above without harm. if it is my car, i will not do it, warranty and all.
