I'm supposed to drive on 3 if I drive less than 60? Okay. I don't know. I want to make it easier on me and just drive on D. Is that okay?

that yields better times than just the normal D and my tranny is just fine plus warrenty, so whatever
That's a misnomer.

It sounds and feels fast, but it doesn't help you. You'll shift where there is no power in the rpm band. At least, you'll lose .2 sec or more on the 1/4 mile.

As for tranny, you'll eventually screw up your slushbox. It wasn't designed to shift. Once you hit 40K in mileage, the tranny will start to thump and slip like crazy.

L is the trans only using 1st gear,
2 is the trans only using 1st gear and 2nd gear,
3 is the trans only using 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear,
D is the trans using all 4 gears + O/D gear

so wat does 2 and L do?
your first is correct. putting a 3, O/D will never activate.

a 2 is purely going uphill or downhilll (slow your descent speed).

L is just 1st gear and getting out of a deep mud or snow.

yes. 4th is O/D for a slushbox.

If I remember my stock tranny shift pts correctly,
4th gear = +63 mph
3rd gear =
2nd gear =
1st gear =

I can't remember the rest. My car has't been stock for a very long.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission.htm

i love that page.

please read up and learn what "gears" are, those strange and magical things that help make your car go vroom.

if you are lazy here is the basic version:
an engine can only safely rotate in a certain rpm band. most engines can operate between 600 revolutions per minute and 6000 (or more, 9000 maybe). a gear is designed to translate a small turning wheel's force to a larger turning wheel's force. if there were only one gear on a car, than the tires could only rotate with the maximum revolutions of the engine. so there are multiple gears. each gear is progressively larger, giving the range of speeds the tires can rotate at in relation to the engine a larger range. so 1st gear, the tires can rotate from 0-30 mph, in 2nd gear they can rotate from 5-60mph, 3rd they can rotate from 15-80mph, etc (i just made those up, they are not exact). your transmission selects these gears (if you are auto) for the proper speed you are driving. L-3 gears are reduction gears. overdrive, by definition, means that the output is greater than the input, which means that your car can travel at highway speeds and the engine can still stay at a lower rpm, increasing effeciency. for this you need a gear ration that is < 1:1. read up on gear ratios and how they work.
