Bump

You ready for this info. you know why there are no DIGITAL speedo places? I do. IT"S because they are a changeable part. The industry went to digital because of milage tampering with analog. Digital clusters say 2000 to present use digital to fade out the ole' turning back the clock. THE MILAGE is in the ECU! i can take my 23000 mile cluster and put in a brand new one off the line, and guess what, the milage reads 23000. the clusters are designed to be like a TV set. the ECU controls the whole car. I so fervently believe in this that tomorrow i am going to swap an ES for and OZ. then report what i get when the engine is turned on. one thing we never thought. if the milage is in the cluster why don't the 150,000 mile guys just buy new guages to start back at 0? you know before they sell it. i am so excited i will post my findings.

YES i am going to do the install in like 3 hours. then i will report my findings. if the cluster swap goes the way of the shlt house. i will sell this cluster.

THEORY: mileage will be updated on new cluster to 23000.

if said mileage does not appear, LCD chips between ES and OZ clusters will be swapped. IF mileage is still not correct then that will prove once and for all where the ****ING MILEAGE IS STORED!

Tminus -3hrs.......

first hand experience
Have an ES with 29000 miles on the ODO. Bought an OZ guage and ODO has 39000. When I put the OZ guage into my ES, it still says 39000. Sooo... its definitely NOT in the ECU of the car but in the guage assembly somewhere. Havent had the chance to look at my old ES guage coz I usually put it back whenever i have to go to the dealer or something

Never thought about that until now, very interesting. If it is a piece that just has pins or something and is Plug n Play like computer add- ons then this might or should work. Will check it out when I get home.

don't even worry about it. I just tried it
the ES LCD pins are like 2" long. the OZ pins are only 1". they are not interchangeable. unless you clip them. NOT WORTH IT.
The Gauges show the mileage of the cluster not the car. Turns out my theory is bullshlt. Be VERY careful pulling that damn thing out. the OZ is left side long and the ES is right side long. I have a mileage difference of about 15000. eventually i will get that fixed. so if you want to switch gauges do it at your own risk. I just did it just now and am reporting as i saw it. the LCD screens are very fragile make sure you have the proper tool to remove it. ****ing gauges torn my dash something fierce. if i hadn't already purchased a dash i would have gone ballistic.

Check out this link for black boxes in cars..
http://www.seniormag.com/headlines/blackboxcars.htm
Though they might not be in the lancer and record the milage, in other cars they certainly do. _Most_ of the cars at the dealership I work (Lafontaine Toyota/Honda/Hyundai/Kia/Suzuki/Scion) at have them in there now.. when we do cluster swaps with our cars the mileage automatically changes on the LCD screen in the gauges because of the black box thingy.. I wouldn't rule that out if they start putting them in the new lancers.

phantom....don't under estimate the black box theory. Mitsus do not have them.....yet! There are some cars that do. And they can be used against you in court! He is not totally off base saying that. The lancer though, does not have it.

The mileage is definately in the cluster itself. I switched my es cluster (30k miles) with an oz cluster (50k miles) and it shows 50k miles when i plugged it in. The only problem with the evo 8 cluster is that the mph reading is higher than the es,ls,oz cluster.. so if you maxed your lancer out at 130 and you had the evo8 gauge cluster then it would say you were going 180mph or whatever their max is. Phantom0 you took both the es and oz cluster apart and looked at the chips? I'm interested now.. i think i'll take mine apart and have a look at it.

yeah did it right here at my desk. i work all day so everyone was interested as to what the hell i was doing. turns out the clusters are different. i ****ed with the needle for temp, i need to fix that and the gas needle is fubar too, have to adjust them. but i like the red glow. since i have completely dissassembled them both i can tell you that those bulbs can be changed. my OZ cluster doesn't shine very bright where it says lancer, is something wrong? my dimmer is all the way up thats how i like it.

after seeing teh red glow i changed my cd color contrast to red now they match. i have a kameleon JVC. they look sweet at night glowing together.

also i am purchasing a digital mileage changer. if any of you are interested in having correct mileage, let me know you pay shipping +$30 and i will up your mileage for you.

Phantom0, the Lancer on my gauges is pretty dim as well. You can replace the bulbs yes, but the problem is, only the dealership sells the replacements and they only sell the ES and the red bulbs. How does the digital mileage changer work?
