HA! gauge mileage switch Theory

ok going from es to oz gauge cluster seems like a pain in the ****. Mitsubishi can do it for $50. I am talkin about the mileage setting. if you have 10 miles and your new cluster has 7 yur screwed. you can't turn the mileage up on a dgital without special equipment or the dealer.

1. when the dealer does it you lose your cluster for about 2 weeks, and $50. they have to send yur new cluster and teh old cluster to the east coast. (i am west coast)

so now how to change it yourself? am i wrong or are the guts the same just the face plates are different. what about switching chasis? is that unheard of? would it be possible? i ahve dissasembled an OZ cluster. the miles display (LCD) has a Chip attached to the back. could it be that the chip in question is my mileage counter memeory? Maybe i am crazy.

feel free to share your suggestions. and opinions. just try keeping it on TOPIC.

I have 2, only, one is in my car. personally i think that the LCD+Chip would have to be swapped. seeing as the Chip is pressed with connector pins to the LCD.

if you look in the yellow pages, there's shops listed under "speedometer." they're licensed to changed mileage on odometers and give you a certificate for it. see if it's cheaper and faster through them.

I heard that the mileage was in the ECU of the car and is just transfered into that little LCD panel on the gauge cluster every time you turn the key to your car. I am pretty sure there is two ECU's in the Lancer OZ.. one under and behind the glove box and one by the fuse box in the driver side engine compartment.. Also I'm not sure if the car has a "black box", but those record EVERYTHING you do in your car from acceleration, braking, g-force in turns, and all that junk. The black box is used for after you get in an accident to see how it happened and if the air bags deployed on time. My old eclipse had one.. I disabled it because I like my privacy. The police in my state will take them out of your car and analyize them to see if you were going over the speed limit in an accident and then give you a ticket. They just hook it up to a laptop and go. =o I think your milage could also be backed up in that too.

wiretap i am sooooooooooo going to say you are wrong. there is no A) black box those are in airplanes. B) mileage stored in the ECU. the mileage cannot be stored in the ECU, if it was then changing clusters would be a snap!.

true i just want to know if the mileage is actually stored in the Cluster or the ECU. If it is in the ECU couldn't changing gauges just be as simple as accessing the ECU and saying "HEY I HAVE A NEW CLUSTER". if it is in the Cluster then money would deffinatly come in to play. i will switch them this weekend and see what happens.

the mileage is stored in the cluster itself

wiretap- that other 'ecu' in the engine comparment, the large block in the fuse panel, is a bunch of relays, no 'brain' function done by that, OZ has the same electronic setup as an ES or LS lancer

i'm thinking that the LCD chip is the key. it has 4 pins on each side so it looks like a square spider.
