I don't recall much about the rust proofing option (I live in Ca, so we don't really worry about it much) but I can tell you almost any car is prone to rust. Maybe check with a paint company about having something sprayed on the undercarraige. I think that's all Mitsu would have done. But other than that, just wash your car regurlarly (even if it's snowing or raining) to get the salt off the steel parts.

im pretty sure the 04-05 mitsus have 7 year/100k mi. rust protection on the body panels.

that 1,000 bucks for rust protection is probably just another way for them to markup the price like theft guard and wax coating and stuff.

my dad always gets it with any new car we buy, probably because of how much salt they throw around here. it's basically just a thick coating of something that they spray onto the chassis. but as i recall from getting that on the lancer, i dont think it cost $1000 or anywhere close to that..

there is a difference between rust undercoating protection(important for all you snow guys), and paint protection(important for all us sun guys). i opted not to get either. i figure my evo(sorry lancer guys), has mostly aluminum panels, and the 7 year rust through warranty should be good enough. All you snow people, just make sure you also rinse off the UNDERSIDE of your car as well as the top part.
note: the mitsu warranty only covers complete rust through of a panel(i.e. rust bubbles), now a days, it is not as much as a problem as before. anyway, if you really think you need it, get the electonic protector, still not going to do as well as when you rinse off the bottom of your car afer driving on salted roads.

it was published in a recent magazine that its one of the biggest rippoffs when it comes to buying new cars. they already have rust protection from the factory. all they do is basically just spray on a 2nd coat, which you dont need in the first place. save your money.
