These days there is usually a "pre-cat", designed to warm up more quickly to meet cold-start emissions requirements, then the primary cat.

well if it's purpose is not really an emissions thing and is more of a cold start thing, i don't see what all the hub bub is about it being illegal to remove it. well the removal of the first cat anyways...

The use of the second cat is to further scrub emissions. The first cat is placed right in front of the block to help reduce cold start emissions. Removing either cat is illegal depending on your emissions laws. Notice the disclaimer on the test pipe's description.

With the old design of cats, it would take a while for a single cat to warm up during cold starts, and it requires a fairly large amount of exhaust for the second cat to actually work. Doesn't seem like a big deal, but multiply it by the amount of cars that have cold starts on any given day, and you'll get the picture. Word is that NASA (of all people) has developed a cat that doesn't require a second in order to curb cold start C02. Wave of the future, supposedly.

ok, so do the RRM and RMR headers get rid of a cat? if so, then the headers won't pass smog in Ca, right?
