FCs are great cars. Sound nasty thought with a cat-back system. With 8k you can pick up a nice RX-7 turbo in good condition. Also you will want to make sure yours has a LSD. I think it came as a mid year change in '88 could be wrong.
As far as a 2nd Gen Eclipse, well you would HAVE to get the 4G63T, ie GST or GSX. Insurance is high, and well they are a serious PITA. I have a 95 and boy is it a head ache sometimes. Seems like random luck though, some guys are putting out 300whp with no problems at all on dailys, while others (like me) consider 200whp and running a good day.
Great forums, great communities, check 'em out.

he'd be able to get a salvage/wrecked FD for 8k, the FC that I could get for that money would be an 89GTUs. The 89GTUs is the rarest FC! I would think hard about getting a swapped s5 vert that has a t2 in it.
I have a non-running 87 base FC that could be sold to you for $500.

oh yea, I had a 2nd gen Talon ES (420a motor) I did an eclipse conversion on. The car looked flawless.. but the trans went out and lower control arms snapped. Maybe the eclipse AWD would be a different story, but I would stay away from those.
check out my post from today https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=132956 my buddies do a lot of work on early 90's sports cars. my best friend runs a turboII motor in his FC 'vert (mazda only made N/A convertibles for north america). He's got some basic power upgrades and a standalone (unnecessary now, but he's trying to build a 400 whp car) and he keeps up with / pulls on my Evo at highway speeds. The RX has rally nice power delivery and if you take care of them right they have little to no problems.
my friends accomplished the swap by themselves and are now undertaking a 300ZX swap (putting a TT 300zx engine into an N/A chassis). both cars are really cool and have great aftermarket support. you can't go wrong either way.
check out the forums at www.team3racing.com and you'll be able to find details on both swaps. the RX7 went very smoothly but the donor car for the Z was pretty well messed up (shredded turbos/blows seals/etc). either way...good luck
EDIT: i should mention a third member (the brother of the 300ZX guy) is running a silvia-converted 240sx with an SR20DET swap among other drift-goodies. he'll be featured in the ACT booth at Formula D this weekend in Wall, NJ

you can get one easy for like 5-6k, and still have 2k to fix/repair anything

Is that the twin turbo though? I've heard some horror stories about them. Low mileage turbos seem to go in the low teens as well.
