Official UK Evo VII

Finally Mitsubishi has announced details about the official (non grey import) UK Evo VII, from WhatCar. I wonder what this means for the US version, if anything?

Mistubishi has at last confirmed prices of its sensational Lancer Evolution VII, set to reach UK showrooms in March.

European specification Evo VII RS II prices have finally been fixed at £29,995 for the car in sizzling 276bhp trim, and £31,495 for the scorching 300bhp Evo VII 300 - despite Japanese-spec cars going on sale 12 months ago.

Although Mitsubishi is yet to put either car against the stopwatch, a 0-60mph sprint of 4.4sec is likely for the standard car, while the Evo VII 300 should reach the same speed in just 4.0sec. Both models will be capable of over 150mph.

The Evo will face stiff competition from the new Subaru Impreza WRX STi, which went on sale this month. The £25,995 Subaru undercuts the Mitsubishi by £4000, but company insiders argue that the Evo VII's 15bhp power advantage and sophisticated electronic stability system justify the premium.

Full specifications won't be announced for another couple of weeks, but it is known that the Evo VII 300 will look slightly different from the standard car, with a carbon-fibre dash, switch panels and gearknob, and rear spoiler end plates.

From another site:
The official UK Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII will cost from £29,995. Two models will be offered, the RS II 276 bhp version, which has specification including Active Yaw Control and Recaro seats, and the Evo VII 300 - this has 300 bhp, a modified engine and exhaust system, a carbon-fibre dash and switch panels, carbon-fibre gear knob and carbon-fibre rear spoiler end plates. This model will cost £31,495, and it will offer 0-60 mph acceleration in 4 seconds (the RSII accelerates 0-60 in 4.4 seconds). Mitsubishi has launched both these models today at the Autosport International Show at the Birmingham NEC. Meanwhile at the Detroit Motor Show, Mitsubishi has announced its intentions to appeal more to young buyers, and has revealed its new slogan. In the States, 38% of Mitsubishi buyers are under 35 - a very different age profile to UK buyers. "The company will adopt a slogan of 'wake up and drive'", said President and CEO Pierre Gagnon. "Spirited cars for spirited people will be the new global message". Mitsubishi has made a concerted effort to rejuvenate its image, and the design team has now produced four new concept cars in four months. It will be launching no less than 16 new production models worldwide in the next two years. Design chief Oliver Boulay said of the concepts: "These show a clear focus for our new design identity and has been achieved with speed, passion, teamwork and a commitment to deliver". The SUP (Sports Utility Pack) Cabriolet was unveiled at Detroit.
Will this marketing jargon appeal to UK buyers? The 'halo effect' of models such as the Evo VII is more likely to bring younger buyers to the brand. That and the quick replacement of dullards such as the Carisma and Colt?

Cars purchased in the UK tend to be pricier than in other parts of the world.

Take for example the 2002 new age Subaru WRX. It lists for 21495 GBP which is almost $31000 USD... it sells for $25000 USD in the States. So it sells in the US for about 20% cheaper than it does in the UK.

Do the same math with the 30000 GBP list price of the EVO7, as announced, and you get $34500 USD.

There's no way I personally would consider this car at that price point if it doesn't include all the goodies that the JDM version has.

This is all assuming that this math exercise we just did here is indicative of what we're going to see from MMSA.

Can someone do a similar comparison between Japanese prices and US prices for other cars as well? Maybe a Mitsubishi car that both Japan and the States are privy to might be a good comparison.

Hi there,

When you import a car, you have to pay freight,
duty, VAT and other costs.
In the UK, 10% duty and 17.5% VAT is required.
So the price in the UK is at least 30% more
expensive than the price in Japan.

Yours,
Shin

That's right, Shin. Nihonjin darou ka??
And more importantly these prices are including the "Ralliart-rape-their-customers" tax. You can get grey imports of the 7 for about 27k pounds which also have a reasonable profit for the company that import them and there are some respectable ones out there. Have a look a www.warrenders.co.uk

Hi Michael,

Hi Michael,

Do you know Dino?
I have arranged Mine's modification for his GTR34 in Japan.
My business,,,, at the moment, I'm just doing my best.
I love performance cars, so I always help and give information/advice the English people who are in trouble about their own Jap cars.
About brand new Evo7, usually we have to register the car in Japan first and de-register the car before shipment.
It is strange custom in Japan but car dealer does not sell their car witout registration. Maybe they make a lot of money with registration fee.
So, for the brand-new car, we have to pay registration/de-registration cost in Japan, customs handling charge in Japan, freight, freight insurance, customs handling charge in the UK, 10% duty, SVA(Single Vehicle Approval)/registration cost in the UK, and 17.5% VAT.
Of course, traders have to be careful about exchange rate risks.
If you'd like to save too much money and you go for the un-reliable trader/importer, you will not be satisfied with the quality because un-reliable importers deal with un-reliable agent in Japan.
Thesedays, you can easily compare the prices between in Japan and in the UK via internet.

Yours,
Shin

Yes, I know about all these riscs, that's why I suggested warrenders and I think you would be good also as you have very good contacts in Japan.

I know Dino very well, we used to study together and I visit him or he visits me evrytime I'm in Japan. He should be back in Japan today.

Hi Michael,

So, have you lived in Tokyo?
You seem to be living in Germany now, right?
I look forward to seeing you someday.
Dino's car is now very fantastic.
He done Mine's 400ps menu for his GTR34.
Have you ever heard his impression?
I hope he's satisfied with it.
It has sport catalyst, so the emission would be ok.

Yours,
Shin

We studied together in England, but yes, I've lived near Tokyo in Ichikawa (Tozai-sen, Minami-Gyoutoku). He seems to be happy with the mods that you organised for their R-34, says it pulls a lot better now.
I ain't to big a fan of the new Skylines, too heavy I love the R 32 as that was the model that was out at the time when I lived in Japan in 92/93.
