**HELP** steering wheel loose

after seaching god knows how many post i need tons of pics around the steering wheel.

the problem i am having is that my steering wheel became completely loose, i was driving and it just dropped into my lap.

note: not the entire steering wheel, its still attached, it just won't stay up.

i read in a different thread that the wheel is attached with 2 10mm bolts somewhere which i think have become loose or broken.

i can still steer the car but it now feels like i am drving a go-kart b/c the freaking steering wheel rests in my lap...

any help or advice would be greatly needed. gonna go take the entire dash apart right now. will let yall know when i am done with this, hopefully i can fix it myself....

Scary stuff man, my friend was on a freeway onramp yesterday when the steering wheel literally came off into his hands (he drives a '67 Skylark). He thought he was gonna crash and die. I can't really help you on this but I hope you get it fixed quicky so that you don't get into an accident!! It's crazy, didn't know this type of thig happened often.

So what's really happening is the tilt won't stay locked, and it keeps dropping to the lowest point?

That's different than the wheel coming off in your hands. Remove the lower section of dash below the wheel, should only be 2 screws going up into the console, and snap clips. You might be able to get a good look with that part out of the way.

This is a dealer problem though man. Not taking it in is just stupid. Even if you can fix it yourself, you have no idea what caused it to fail in the first part, and no way to say that it won't fail again.

Mine came loose before, but more went from side to side. When I took it to the dealership, he said it was the first case of that happening, but they repaired it under warranty (it needed a whole new steering column). If you're not under warranty, maybe ask them to search for previous failures of the kind. If enough cases are documented, it should be a recall since it is a safety issue. If not, you might be SOL, or you might get lucky and those two bolts will fix it. But I can tell you from both me and Rob from RRM going under my dashboard trying to fix it, it's not worth monkeying with yourself. It's not as simple as tightening 2 bolts, they are position bolts and have all sorts of location sensative brackets around them.

You mean the tilt went out, or the whole steering wheel?
