Thinking about converting

Alright guys and gals, i need you imput on this. I had a local performance shop look under the hood of my 2002 OZ and want to do a Evo V or VI conversion. I would be getting the JDM Evo V or VI engine, drive tran and a custom 6 speed tranny to fit it. To sum it all up I would have a Evo engine, 6 speeds and all wheel drive. The price quoted for me was 6-7g installed. Should I do it?

$6-$7K??? from a local shop, what kind of experience do they have with EVOs? And by what 6-spd tranny are they using? The new JDM EVO 8's one??? I highly doubt you can achieve that with that kind of budget.

BTW, if you want to know why did I say that, click on the link in my signature.

This shop has been doing swaps for over ??? years now. So far all the swaps have gone though with no problems. I do know they just converted a Mirage and Talon TSI, both had evo engins dropped in.

Of course there are shops out there that has the capability of doing such conversion. However, I highly doubt that they car achieve that for that price. The engine/tranny combo along costs ~ $2-4K based on condition...what about the labor? cutting and welding the chassis/body won't be cheap.

I'm not saying that can't be done, however, ALWAYS know what you're getting into BEFORE putting any money down...

since nobody has done an evo swap into a lancer lets stop assuming its gonna cost 15k just cause somebody says it will and let somebody try and do it, you might find out its easier than you think once you try it out.

Wrong, it has been done.

Several shops have done it for street and rally use. One of them gave me a quote on doing a EVO V/VI conversion and it costs $10K for labor/frabrication alone. I know that's kind of high, but the shop is a well-known one in rally circle, which I don't want to reveal their identity since it might affect their business.

Again, it's your money and your decision to make, what do I know?

if you have the cash...
go for it...
if the shop is definite that it can be done..
then by all means step up and be the first...

Click the following link if you want to read more, I strongly suggest you to read the interview in regards to the problems that he encountered during that swap. Again, if you decide to go for it, be prepared...Good Luck

Go for it.....just get a written cost ahead of time so they can't say 6-10 over what they quoted when done. And for the love of god....TAKE PICTURES!!!!!!!!!

why not sell the oz and use the rest or the money and the money for the conversion and but an evo. it'll be pretty much the same thing without the key ingrediant hassle and future probs when the engine rips out your oz, cause mounts don't hold or a poor weld. big risk for a car that's not rally or race porpose.

but hey good luck w/ that let us all know how it goes

This is my opinion on the matter. All this depends on what your goals are.

Personally, I can think about how that 6-7K could be spent to make a Lancer with pretty much every damn thing on it. New suspension, turbo, bunch of little goodies, and it'd probably be in somewhere near the stock range of the car you'd be converting. Maybe better considering the kind of suspension upgrades that could buy, and how much power you could get to the ground with that turbo

By why pay 20,000 extra after he sells the lancer to get the evo, when he can spend 10,000 for the conversion, and have a custom ride.

My 2 cents worth, 16-17 k lancer oz + 10-15 k to add awd and evo engine = 26-32k spent for a "EVO" with half of the chassis strength/ridgidity, uncertain reliability/safety, **** resale value and no warenty .... not worth it to me, maybe before the EVO 8 was available in the us but if your going to spend EVO money to try to come close to EVO performance why not buy an EVO . the lancer oz is a nice car and I fully back turbo, suspension and other mods but thats just too buch dough to justify....... My .02 no offence intended

Edit : too much not buch

I do also feel it's alot of money to put into the car,but once you've started to put alot of money into the car you'LL very rarely get it back. I've tried to get out of my car at many dealers and I get the same answers NO,can only give you like $12,000 for it. So now I'm just putting more money into it until I'm happy. It's a keeper.
