Did you say you paid 20k for the lancer oz rally??? Dont Ralliarts sell for less then that? I only paid 15k for mine in 2003

That's what I said. I didn't get screwed, I got the sun and sound package, door scuff plates, carbon fiber interior accents, cargo net, etc. Basically everything one can get on the car. A ralliart with the same options even on Mitsu's web site msrp's for $21,339, and the OZ with same options msrp's for $19,498. I just rounded the price up to $20K because of tax, title and plates. So no I didn't get screwed, those prices are taken directly from mitsu's web site. Those prices above don't even include the small amount of negative equity I had on the car I traded for my OZ either, so I basically got my OZ at dealer cost out the door with negative equity for $20K
The sad part is they are worthless because they depreciate so much in value that KBB says on a dealer trade my ride is only worth $12.2k five months after I bought it, and I still owe around $18k on it.
If I would have been smart and known better I would have bought a regular old impreza 2.5i that cost $1k less than I paid for my OZ and it could spank a ralliart because it's awd. Used Subarus around here with more than 50k miles on them still go for around $15k. They do not depreciate in value.
I'm not saying don't ever buy a Lancer or anything like that, but if i'd have known this before I bought mine I would have never bought it. I can think of at least 5 other cars that cost less, hold their value better, and can spank any Lancer, ralliart included without spending any money in mods.

 

I know the feeling...I just bought my 03 ES in 2004 with 5K miles for $11K. I work for BMW/MINI and the only thing keeping me from buying one is my car being worth less than what I owe. Any Mitsu other than the 3000GT and Evo don't hold values. It's almost as bad as domestics! (I said ALMOST)

 

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from buying Lancers, heck I own one. I'm just stating the facts that I didn't know before purchasing one. They are fun cars to drive, and handle fairly well with the right strut and sway bars installed, which imo is something that should have been there from the factory, but the speed and power department is hopeless for these things. There are way better choices out there in cars to buy. I agree the only cars they make that are worth anything are the evo and the 3000gt, but there aren't too many folks out there that can afford them, so my next ride this spring will definately be the wrx, which sadly to say brand new is only $4k more than I paid for my Lancer and can easily hang with the fastest stock 4 banger cars out there.

 

Anything made by Subaru holds value well. I remember 7 years ago when I first got my license instead of my Shadow I wanted a Subaru Impreza wagon but even with 25K miles on it Carmax wanted almost $20,000. Being in high school and not begging my parents for money (I did work and I did save money) I just kept what I had. That sold for almost nothing, and I got rid of my 1998 Galant and lost money on that, too. After this car, I am done with Mitsubishi and am moving onto either a BMW or MINI, seeing as how I get discounts on both at work.

You are right, the Lancer is fun to drive. I have enjoyed how it handles, but the power SUCKS. 120 ADVERTISED HP is too low for how heavy the car is...on top of it having an iron block. It had been reliable, thank God, but I still would drive something else if I had the money.

 

I mod mine because i enjoy doing so, not much for the gains, but because its what i have to work with and something that i like spending time and money on. don't let evo owner's discourage you though. The main problem derived from modding mitsubishi's is the tough ecu they have, somehow it finds a way around everthing you do. evo's wouldn't be anything that special when modded without the great reflashes they have offered to them (and here comes the evo owners to bash). im not aware of anyone that does reflashes for our cars, but if we did get someone, im sure that it would help greatly.

 

MOD a Lancer because:

Girls don't know the difference between an ES and an EVO

Insurance is cheaper

Be different.

EVOs are driven by strippers and dentists so it ain't nothing special no mo!

Lancers done right are good looking cars and can run 13s which is comparable with cars twice the price. (Make EVO guys feel stupid)

It is fun to personalize your ride

14 inch tires are cheap when you have to replace them

You can take the hubcaps off and just spray paint the rims black...Looks Mean!

People usually only steal Hondas

AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON TO MOD A LANCER..... When your car breaks down you can always drive you Aunt's ES and feel right at home!

That is o so true, and since we are so underpowered per say, we don't really have to worry about torque steer. Also, since it doesn't have AWD it won't burn up those tires as quickly, nor clutch for that matter.

 

Actually there are Evo's knocking on the 8 second barrier.

 

with what shot of nitrous are we talking? i doubt that you can go much faster than the ams evo without putting some spray in there.

2. Insurance is cheaper, although you will be spending the money you save into the Lancer as it costs more to make a Lancer faster. On a side note, my insurance is cheap. They classify my car as standard performance. My dad pays more on his WRX. When my car came out the Evo wasn't even classified yet. So in the eyes of the insurance company, it's a Lancer.
