Timing Belt and Crank pulley

Well, I just got to 68,000 miles and I'm making plans on changing my timing belt. On the other hand I also want to get a RRM Crank pulley. Is it a good idea to get the pulley on first or while the belt is being changed? (Maybe I can beg them to take off the bolt) so they can tighten it down to specs and they have the tools. I have no "real tools" around and hardly no one that is car savy.

It was either Water pump or a Crank pulley and after reading the "I got my timing belt changed today" thread I've decided not to get that done yet.

The guys at Mitsu don't want me to change out my crank pulley but what can you say? Get it done before or after?

Do your timing belt AND water pump first. Yes it is costly but you drive a 4 cyl engine, if your belt goes you have just blown your engine.

Maintance before mods myfriend.

Save up.

Get the needed parts (timing belt, water pump, etc) AND the pulley.

Take it all to a shop (NOT A DEALERSHIP) and have them install everything for half what the dealership would charge (yes, dealership rates are usually double that of normal shops).

(Sigh) I guess I am getting the Timing belt with the Water pump done then. I was at the dealership yesterday and got quoted on the belt (around $320) and the Pump ($130 plus $70 in labor) so thats $500... Im at 69,000 now.

After 2 more people in this thread said to get the pump done also I went back and looked at the "timing belt thread" and seen more people who said that they got it done at the same time also so I guess I changed my mind. I will get both done and pay that off over the next 2 months and put my summer modding project on hold. Oh well, no Pulley for me then...

Don't go to the dealership. They overcharge. Hello!

Get a quote from a local shop. I guarantee it'll be cheaper (unless they're scam artists).

Dealer ships are more expensive but there are some jobs I trust them more with than some off brand hole in the wall shops...

+100

find a local shop (someone who you trust) put some time in helping them with small jobs (oil changes, tire rotation, Head gaskets(jk)) then you can usually get them to help you out with your projects (and charge you alot less).

not only will you get your parts installed but you will learn things as well

Why are you changing your belt sooooo soon?

Sorry buddy, Timing Belt every 60,000 and Water pump every 100,000 (Thats what the service maneger told me) I am taking the advice from the fine people here and getting it changed. Though the manager did say my car should pretty much outlast the water pump and that stress from the timing belt being off won't hurt the pump but I don't know. I am going to try and get it changed.

As for getting a good shop here to do it, I live in a very country part of SC. I think I am going to take it to Precision Tune...there are NO shops that I know of around here that I would trust.
