Lancer General Come on in and discuss the US Lancer.

Just out of curiousity has anyone ever used a N/A chasis for a Evo conversion?

There are people who have done it to +20 cars.
Import duty in this country is extreme so people buy in partially wrecked evos and buy a new lancer to do a swap. It works to a certain degree but there's a lot of work involved.
First of all, swapping is a gigantic task, cos you pretty much need to take everything out twice then put them back in again.
The body of the cars are different. The evo is stronger (so i've been told) but you can get away with that if you go to a good shop and they can do some welding on the chassis for you to stiffen it up which should make up for it. The real pain in the buttt is that you have to swap the passenger footwell to make roon for the rear diff and if you're doing it to a IX or and MR with the JDN SAYC you'll need to find a place for the SAYC fluid tank in the trunk somewhere. The operation of faffing around with the footwell is kindda tricky and can cause the car to be misaligned.

At the end of the day, a real evo (like mine) costs $92k and the swapped one costs around $66k so there's a saving - but only if you live in a crappy part of the world like mine. The swapped one will never drive like a stocker though. Imagine taking all the bits out of your car then putting them back in again. Unless you're using a really neat and professional shop, it won't ever be the same.

im a welder/fabricator. ive done 20+ cars welding up and fabbing stuff. im only in my evo not that much cuz insurance paid me off and i bought the car back for dirt cheap. i can stich weld the whole freakin mirage chassis, as far as body im worried if i adapted the evo 8 **** on a mirage that the wheels would stic kout more cuz the body on evos are wider then mirages? correct me if im wrong.

im still stuck in this wedge. im debating whether to sell all my parts or build a sleeping monster.... im leaning toward the 1999=2000 mitsubishi mirage chassis and then again im leaing to sell all this crap and reinvest in my other evo or s14... i duno.

^A Mirage will have problems with the track width and iirc there's still no spage for the rear diff and such. Unlike a lancer where you can (specially as a fabricator/welder) transplant a panel, you might have to make one up special.
To be honest, I haven't seen them in a while so I can't remember but I think it is possible to put the evo drivetrain in a mirage but there's probably a lot of work as I have only seen it on rally cars at pretty high level of competition.

Oh boy, this is a loaded question.

From 3g Mirages/Colts/Summits and 4g mirages = In the US, they have had DSM swap + AWD while few even tackled getting Evo 3's complete swaps.

From the 5g mirages = In the US, few have taken the task of complete swaps from Evo 4 and up, even daunting of getting E8 and up swaps. It costs less in NZ and Aussieland.

In the early year, most of these swaps were done by people with tons of money and wanted to hit the show circuit for major "cool point" (yes, you have seen those people claiming to have the real deal when it was actually a swap). When the Evo 8 came to US shores, it drove the prices down enough that more miragers are attempting it than ever before.

As for the current lancer, I don't know the amount of swap attempts here.

BTW: want to see mirages w/ full evo swaps . . . vulture through car domain sites. They are out there.

As for Alchy on the mirage suspension, if you have an OZ, it's not share w/ the mirage. Only the ES guys, because Mitsu carried over the chassis as a cost saving measure. As for many years later, I don't know if the ES is still the same when it first arrived here.

well im leaning toward the 1999-2000 mirage. its gonna be a pain in the ***. i think it'd be worth to have 280 to all 4 wheels with a 6 speed and cusco lsds all around. i duno tho, i might sell it. anyone wanna put a bid on the whole set up?
