brokeazzlos is right, there's a TSB for this code and they will fix it for free regardless of your mods. I suggest searching for this on the forum. As far as I remember people had a lot of problems after Mitsu 'fixed' that code.
car has to be under 80K miles though I had mone done at 74K and they saiidit was a $1000 job adn i git lucky...LOL

^That's interesting...I didn't know that. Just buy an aftermarket header and the problem is fixed.

I guess if you can go ahead and service your car with mitsu then.

there is a dealership near where i work, i will take it there and have them check it out. i only had the cel a few days ago and its only a matter of time before it comes back on.
I will have them do the recall and replace the cat. And i will report back with any benifits/drawbacks on having the recall done on an auto, cos i havent seen anything on this site about auto's being recalled

If you dident reset it again/Autozone dident clear it, should be stored in memory and they can pull it was their scantool.

And yes, hollowing out or removing a cat will keep your CEL on unless you get that eliminator =P

My cat melted on my old car, so I hollowed it out. Ugh Talk about sounding like rice. Take it for the TSB, save your head some serious headaches. lol

ok well. i finnally got the cat sorted, took it down to the mitsu dealership. the car had already had the reflash, but they still replaced the cat converter for free. There is an 80,000 mile warranty on the emissions stuff, so that was good.
No problems so far, the car smelled a bit funny for a couple of days but thats gone now. I did notice a slight pickup in performance, only slight though. It may well be in my head. lol.

Okay bringing this thread back to life.

I'm having the same problem now.... But I Already have a Header w/ CEL Eliminator in the front. But I'm getting that freaking code too.. when I have it read, it pops up multiple times, so resetting the ECU won't eliminate the code. It actually needs to be cleared w/ an OBDII.

Could this mean my CAT has gone bad?
Oxygen sensor on Header gone bad?
Oxygen sensor on CAT gone bad?

Help.

Wow... I'm glad I never saw this thread before.

The guy's getting P0421 and you're telling him to get an aftermarket header to get rid of it? WTF PEOPLE?

Walle... How long have you had the header/eliminator combo on for? And how long have you had the Cel on?

If the cell came ON a few days after you installed your combo, your eliminator might not be installed properly. It usually takes between 200-500km for the cel to light up. No matter how many time you reset your ecu, the Cel will keep coming on until the find the source.

If you want my personal opinion. Live with it. Why do you care anyway. Have a look at the codes every so often to ensure nothing else is wrong, and learn to live with the light on your dash. If you don't want to, then let us know how you installed your Cel Eliminator.

I've had my combo on for a few months now, maybe 6 or more. It's cold in NY now so it could be the weather affecting me or something, don't know.

CEL Eliminator I doubt. Question is, What code does the Eliminator prevent from popping up? a P0421? or something else?

-David.

How long has the cel been on?
How did you get the code from the ECU if you don't have an OBDII reader?

Well it has been on for 2 weeks. I had it removed by Autozone, but it keeps popping up.

So, something is definitely wrong.

Send a quick email to RRM. They may have seen Cel Eliminator failures before. That'd be your best option and it only takes a few seconds...

Explain it to them the same way you did here.

"Got your Header/Eliminator combo on for months, and Cel started appearing today."

I just emailed Gabe.
They're on the West Coast, so I'll have to wait a few hours, if lucky, for them to answer.

I'll post an update.

Update:

Okay, well Gabe @ RRM got back to me and we troubleshooted the problem. Seems I just installed the CEL Elim. in the wrong place. I personally, never knew the it went on the Actual 2nd O2 sensor on tha CAT, underndeath the car. I always thought it was on the actual header on the 1st O2 sensor.

I'll have to give this a try...
