Should I Buy An '02 Lancer OZ?

A friend of mine has a car just sitting in her driveway - a 2002 lancer oz rally. it has around 70,000 miles and she's going to put a new muffler on it and battery in it before she sells it, and is asking $6900 or best offer. i know its only like 120hp, but it seems like it would be a fun little car to drive. right now i have a 91 corolla that i desperately need to replace. im not concerned about speed, i just want a newer reliable car. are there any things i should check for that are typical problems with these cars? are they expensive to repair (clutch, brakes, stuff like that?) thanks.

the timing belt will need changing, and you might wanna check the other belts.
Really just check all the things that usually need checking on other cars. Is it in good condition?

If so, then ues its worth getting, cos they are very good cars, and if you want you can make them fast.

But don't expect the kind of reliability of those old toyotas... those things are indestructible.

Its like purchasing a used car from a dealership you would check everything before you make your final purchase. And since its from a friend the trust factor should be alot better. But make sure you look at it yourself under the hood, the belly of the car, trunk, interrior make sure everything works. Run the A/C run the heater make sure nothing leaks, Make sure all the fluids are good. Check the brakes, Tires,Belts,Engine block for obvious leaks. Make sure all the hoses are secured check the wipers. I can go on and on just make sure you do a good inspection. And another tip diagnose the car plug in a scan tool and see if there are internal problems. Pull codes and look up what the code means. But most important of all Test drive the car feel it and decide if its for you.

A new muffler? Aftermarket? With that mileage, ask for all the belts replaced, brakes replaced, new clutch if needed, new tires if needed, new battery, and then ask for 6.5k . 70k miles is reasonable for an '02.

The good old leaky slave cylinder would be a big thing to look for if its a manual.
