Why do you drive a lancer?

Don't flame me, because I'm not trying to make anyone mad. I was initially excited when the Lancer was coming to the US until I started reading reviews and saw that 120 hp didn't seem like much for an $18K car. I then stopped paying attention until the Evo came out, but then I discover this message board and see that there's a huge aftermarket and fan base for what seems to be a fairly ordinary econobox.

So tell me, what is it beyond the stats that makes people crazy about this car? Does the engine lend itself well to mods, do people just like the style, is the suspension better than the Civics and Focuses (Foci?) and everything else out there? What makes it worth the money and the enthusiasm?

Thanks for your response.

I think for many people, it's because the car is different that every one else's Civic or Focus.

The car is underpowered, but can be modified with little headache. Besides, it's huge inside and rides very well. It's also fairly good on fuel consumption.

Or there could be those who, like me, wanted to be part of the "Lancer" legacy.

Well i needed a car quick and my dad checked out the lancers. They really are roomy and if you put wheels on the handling is nice. There arent many lancers around so i am happy to not have what everyone else has. I think what makes me enthused about this car is that there are others that are enthused too, so it makes me motivated about wanting to put the best into my car. Also you meet such great people at Lancer meets it makes you love the lancer community.

1) It's not a Civic

2) Althought it's not a TRUE Rally car it still looks close

3) Subaru's Suck and are over priced $35,495 for a WRX and $46,500 for an STI (Canadian)

4) Because there aren't any EVO's here.

5) For the most part Lancer's are still rice free, which means less idiots drive them, which means they're more legitimate tuner cars and therefore less likely to get a bad rap with cops....as opposed to all those kids that are "representin' the 'Civic Nation'"

I liked the looks, no complaints with performance (handles well for an econobox and I definitely don't need a lot of HP for daily driving), and the price was right. I got mine for 300 above list so there was no complaining as far as price. I had in mind a vague notion of "tuning" it, but back then I knew even less than I know now (which still isn't nearly enough). So far the building of the car has been fun despite numerous setbacks, but overall I couldn't have asked for much more from the car...cept a second cam.

For me it was the nice roomy inside and i'm a big guy at 6'5 and i wanted a car i could fit in and not buy a suv and i fit perfectly in the lancer, nice looks, fact that its more original than a civic, i don't care if people bag on it cause its "underpowered", price range, and good gas milage played a big part too since i use it for daily use and go to school

I guess i agree with evryone else here with the "its not a civic" but more importantly ITS NOT A NEON, i dont know about where u guys live but ppl do the dumbest things to neons where i live. Also the lancer just looks hot the front i feel is the best part of the car, especially if you put a aftermarket grill on it, the price was def right after the 2000 rebate i got the price was 12000, and u cant beat that. the inside design is way nicer then any other car in its class, the stereo knocks, and even thow it only has 120at the wheels stock, it gets the hell up and goes

1 - Because my family had one in the Philippines when I was little.
2 - I sat in my cousin's Evolution when I was little, and thats when this whole Lancer/Evolution obsession started.

i had a wrangler that got 9 mpg on the highway and needed something better than that...I have always loved lancers and wished they were in the US. With the trade of my jeep i paid $300 for it (got it for 15k) so the price was def. right. And i like the style, comfort, gas mileage. For the money it was my favorite pick of cars under 25k. Im also a fan of yellow, and like the lancer yellow best. Also in Highlands Ranch (Big community) i think there are only 3 yellow lancers, big plus in my book.

got it cause i have a small ***** hahaha j/k

I got it cause i like the look and feel. I already own a civic so owning 2 would be out of the question. I got rid of my expedition which was getting 14 mpg and the price was right. as a bonus there are alot of goodies out there for it and more on the way
