2009 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS 2.4L CVT
I stand corrected.
Defcon, I dont have the GPS package so I can't go into the settings like that but I'm pretty sure I figured it out while driving earlier. Also, the book says that the volume is supposed to adjust by speed, but my LS had that feature too and the Lancers RF stereo system does not in any way act like a speed controlled system. It almost seems to me like, in reference to the CVT transmission, controlled by a self preservation type program.. Where, when the speakers are hit too hard by loud music/noise/voices the stereo automatically reduces the volume to counter so you dont blow your speakers. Annoying for me because I'm partially deaf thanks to an IED and can barely hear to begin with. I'll know in a few if I actually turned it off or not.

I think what' he's getting at is it's not the ~best~ stereo you can get in a car....
The stereo system is good (the one with the S&S package)... one of the best ~stock~ stereo systems I've heard. However, you ~can~ do better with after market equipment, but then again, most people don't really want or care to listen to a live orchestra/rock concert/rap concert in their cars while driving. The stock RF system is good, but it isn't "the best". However, it's good enough that it is not the first thing I want to "improve" with my '08 GTS.
Also, the sub does cause certain panels inside the car to rattle if you turn the bass up high enough. As an example, Kanye West's CD "Graduation" has a lot of bass tracks that causes the rear "package shelf" to rattle. However, most music that I've listened to in my car doesn't cause the interior panels to rattle. I have notice a rattle in the trunk lid from outside the car once, but it's not all that bad, and I can't hear it inside the car. So, I'm not worried about it. I've better things to do besides chasing down rattles I can't hear while I'm driving.

I don't make it a habit of going around listening to the stereos in every car I see. However for fidelity (sound quality), the Bose system in the '92 and '03 Corvette's is nice (better than the Lancers), but it lacks the bass response we get with the 10" sub in the Lancer. All the other cars I've been in recently (Jetta, Saab 92x, Accord, Vibe, Sunfire, G6, PT Cruiser, MDX, etc) don't come close to the Lancer in the stereo dept.
I don't think any of the cars in the Lancer's price range come close to having the same quality stereo system. So, I guess you can say the Lancer has the "best in class" stereo
To install a better sounding system with Navi using after market equipment, you can probably do it for close to the same amount of money spent on the S&S package, except you won't have the sun roof in the end. In my book it's the sun roof that tips the scales in favor of the S&S package, and the main reason I got the S&S package on my car

In the back of the Lancer booklets (for the 09's at least) it notes that to have the Tech package (which is the Navi unit) you have to have the S&S package. I dont think I've seen one yet that was Navi without the RF setup.
Nunyas is right, Karen, in it's class the Lancer has one of the best stock stereo setups. Though, Chrysler-Jeep uses Bose as it's add-on package stereo system and you can't go wrong with any Bose setup. Though, as it was also mentioned, Chrysler doesn't include the sub in the trunk so even with the wide range and amount of power their stock upgraded systems can handle you dont have the bass to support the overall quality of the music.

cvt vs. m/t
okay back to the cvt compared to the manual version of the gts. Im going to get an 09 gts but i am deciding on wether getting the cvt or m/t. I care about performance do the paddle shifters perform as good as the manual transmission shifting and accelerating, i dont want to get the cvt if it cant perform as good as the m/t. Which one performs better, or are they the same
^^ then how come the 0-60 times with a manual are rated at about a second faster then the CVT could do in both the 08 and 09 lancers?? Manual is faster if you have even moderate experience driving stick
bought my '09 Lancer GTS (CVT-rally red, sun, sound, and Navi) back in April. I love it. I too, am not very comfortable driving a manual and CVT suits me just fine. You won't believe how smooth the ride is. Since it does not shift through any gears, the the car just stays smooth. It's really easy to find yourself speeding because you don't feel that push back into your seat. I have played with my paddle shifters a bit. Gives you a slight feel of a manual, but not completely. They are fun to use though. I get better gas milage when using it in the CVT mode as opposed to the paddle shifters. In town, I am averaging 25-26 mpg. In my opinion, that is not too bad. Also, I have been hearing that CVT gets better gas milage that a manual transmission. It is a great car. Definitely get is stocked. Sun/Sound/Navi. You can't go wrong.
