2009 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS 2.4L CVT

Ok, I'm very interested to buy that car, but I need opinions from owners and non-owner experts..., I'm an expert regarding music, but cars..., hmmm..., I need advice.

Note that this thread is about CVT..., not manual transmission speed lovers.

Share what you think about that specific car..., positive or negative.

Thanks...

I have one in Octane Blue that I purchased on the 19th of this month. Overall it's been excellent so far. The turning, acceleration, fuel economy, comfort. I have a couple issues with the paint, it seems like it may scratch from the road very easily but I can not confirm if the few scratches I have are from the road or something else at this time. Also, there are a couple aspects of the vehicle that are "cheap" such as the sun visors, the driver seat not being able to recline, no power seats, and the doors not automatically locking at 15mph. If you can get a good price on one I'd say go for it! I have the CVT by the way!

I have the 08 CVT GTS.
It's a great car all around. It shifts well and it is perfect for a daily driver. For what it has, performane and the MPG is great. Drive conservatively and your MPG rates well. I have the full package on the car, which includes sunroof, sight and sound, navigation, blue tooth, the whole deal. Get the car fully loaded and you have the perfect tech car, moderate performance for the price.
The new body chassis is well put together and carves corners real well. Handling on any of the models is be far the most noticeable and handles like a European top end. (BMW e.g. IMO)
Only one complaint about the 08 CVT is the sound of the engine. Has like a whiny sound to it. Not to sure about the 09 CVT but the 08 clearly has it.
Aftermarket parts can fix this but at your discretion, naturally.

IMO, out of the Lancer lineup, the GTS is the best choice. CVT or non-CVT.

Thanks to both of you.

Nah... I'm too lazy and stupid to drive manual.

Automobile magazine? I'll Google that and try to find what you're taking about.

..., but what I really want here is opinions of real '09 GTS 2.4L (with CVT) owners on this forum..., you know? Real people driving that car everyday.

Can you explain what that paddle shifter does exactly? When do you use it? At high speed only? Is it effective at low speed?

^^ Wow, you must be really new with the whole car thing. The paddle shifters allow you to shift through the gears by tapping up/down paddles located behind the steering wheel. These are often use when you just want to have fun accelerating or maybe to help slow you down by not using brakes. There is no clutch obviously and you dont have to use the paddle shifters, they are just there if you want to slap through the gears and have some fun with the car.

..., and I guess it does all that smootly, unlike a manual transmission (depending on the driver, of course)?

Yep it does it all smoothly!

I was zippin around, cruising with a friend of mine tonight. Love this car!

I was on the freeway and a cop was behind me and started playing strobe light in my rearview mirror with his 100 million candle power light, I look down at my speed and I'm at 60, which was the marked limit. So I go to my friend, "what the hell does he want"? After about 30 flashes he turns on his lights and siren, so I go to the right lane to pull over after it finally opened up(only 2 lanes available since there is construction on the I-17) and he passes me. Really weird experience

He was a Phoenix PD cop and was out of his jurisdiction too....

The Motor Trend one is cool.

On the one with the comparison against the Nissan, the only thing the Nissan has over the Lancer is the extra HP. But the overall handling goes to the Lancer. What you cannot make up in speed you can make up in handling. Some cars in the Lancer's competition may have more HP but it cannot handle turns, S-roads like the Lancer.
Both reviews give the Lancer a fair value of what it has for the price.

On the paddle shifting inquiry, the paddle shifters work like a manual transmission.
The only thing is that a CVT doesn't have gears like a traditional manual that we all know.
The CVT (continuous variable transmission) is just a device that utlizes pause points on a singular powerband which is to help maintain economical performance.
Hence the shifting "gears" in a CVT.

"A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a transmission which can change steplessly through an infinite number of effective gear ratios between maximum and minimum values. This contrasts with other mechanical transmissions that only allow a few different discrete gear ratios to be selected. The flexibility of a CVT allows the driving shaft to maintain a constant angular velocity over a range of output velocities. This can provide better fuel economy than other transmissions by enabling the engine to run at its most efficient revolutions per minute (RPM) for a range of vehicle speeds."

- WIKIPEDIA

You uses the Paddle Shifters like you would a manual, from 1-6 "shift points" (well, in the lancer that is)
They shift smoother and quicker then a traditional manual.
But remember, a CVT is not gearbox and it's not gears your shifting, it's pause points on an infinite selection of gear ratios.

He was just enjoying the nice Lancer rear end.
