should i turbo my lancer
should i turbo my lancer
i have a 06 lancer es thats AUTOMATIC and i was planning on buying a evo sometime this year but i want to wait till next year to buy the evo because i want a evo x now, but should i buy a turbo kit for my lancer or will it be worthless since the car is automatic?
it depends on your money situation
and what you want out of your car
i dont race or anything i just want to turbo my lancer so it will be faster than it is now and because turbo=sex
i dont need to have the fastest car out there and im not trying to
i wish i could get an evo
but looking at the situation i probly cant afford one now and my lancer is all paid off so all my money can go into parts
and not payments
and almost all the turbo lancer owners on here LOVE their turbos so im sure its worth the money

Save your money for a bigger down payment on the Evo. Unless you plan on keeping the Lancer for don't turbo it. It will be harder to sell it later or get anything on a trade in.
1. Are you making payments?
2. if so, how much longer is your loan gonna last?
3. Do you have several grand spare to buy or build a turbo kit
4. Do you have the money to make repairs when something goes wrong?
5. Do you have the money for extra maintenance?
6. Is this what you REALLY want?
1. heavily modifying a car you are making payments on is a seriously bad idea. The risk is enormous. If your engine blows, you are stuck making payments on a car that doesn't run
2. If you are near the end of making payments, it'd be best to keep your car as stock as possible, so it will be a better trade on something else.
If you still have several years of payments, then turbo'ing is more acceptable, because you have to keep the car a while. HOWEVER, i just sold my lancer and got a new car. I had 3 more years of payments. I sold the car, and bought a GTI, and my payments are only $20 more a month. I now have a factory turbocharged car, that was designed with performance in mind.
Also, if you turbo your lancer. You have the very real option that the car may not last for the duration of your payments. When turbo'ing the 4G94 reliability is dropped dramtically.
3. Turbo kits are expensive. Especially for the lancer. RRM and Turbokits.com are the only full kits around. And they cost between $2,000 -$5,000. It's a lot of money to drop on an econobox car, and only be getting about 200hp. You could take the same amount of money and use it for a downpayment on a better car.
4. If you turbo your lancer, things WILL go wrong. The 4G94 engine sucks giant *****. It was designed as an economy engine, to be good on gas. It was never meant for turbo charging, and when you begin to heavily modify the engine, you are going to have problems. The only real reliable option for turbo'ing thr 4G94 is to fully build up the engine with new pistons/rods so it can handle the boost. This is even more money on top of the turbo kit.
5. Turbo'd cars require more care and attention. You will have to buy monitoring equipment if you plan on keeping the car a while. And checking the engine often is a must.
6. Consider, do you really want to drive a turbocharged automatic? I had an auto 03 Lancer OZ. And i was on the verge of turbocharging it. After a lot of thought, i realized that wasn't what i wanted. The car is and always will be a regular family sedan. I knew it would be a lot of work, a lot of attention and in the end, not really worth the effort.
Once you turbo the car, you are still going to be getting beat by most performance vehicles. And really only outrunning things like Civic's (stock). You will be far from the league of Evo's, and if an Evo is what you truly want, then start saving your money and work towards the Evo, you will be much happier in the end

Something else to keep in mind, trying to replicate the feeling a stock performance car with aftermarket parts is extraordinarily difficult and expensive (assuming you do it right). Manufacturers spend more in a week developing a car than a tuning shop spends in a year designing parts, very few shops can build cars as well as OEM and those that do charge a lot.
