Help me understand HID lighting installations?
Help me understand HID lighting installations?
So I am looking into changing my 2008 Lancer ES lights to HID lights.
this is what I understand so far:
I need D2R lights because the car has reflector headlights
A relay on the kit is (apparently) recommended
fog lights need h11 bulbs
low beams = 9006
high beams = 9005
I was on mobilehid.com and I was hoping to find a kit that had everything I needed...I am capable of setting everything up, i think it would be fun to try to do on my own...
what I DON'T understand----is what to really buy? I can't seem to find the right kit for my car....people say look for D2R kits, but all i can find are D2R bulbs---and no kits...
can anyone perhaps recommend what I actually need to purchase to set this all up? i'm after 6000k temp bulbs.
I am sorry for my lack of knowledge, im working on it

What color am I looking for?
What am I willing to pay?
What am I going to do about the Daytime running light flicker problem?
1. Color is a hard question to answer. everyone is different everyone has different tastes. Another thing you need to understand is that the color varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, if company A and company B both offer you a 6000k kit, I am 100% sure the two sets will look different. There is no real international standard when it comes to bulb colors, everything is done by eye. If you wish to stay on the right side of the law, meaning not be pulled over then try to keep the color below 6500k. Colors above that tend to look more exotic and have greater potential for being pulled over. Its not the only factor. lol some people have their HIDs aimed too high as well. Everyone must be responsible when it comes to light leveling.
2. Cost can vary. Some will say Japan is the best and the higher 200 to 300 dollar price tag is justify, some say, Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese etc... are all ok. Second there are alot of manufacturers that claim to be something that they are not, like claiming they use real Philips bulbs or balast equpiment and so on. some might be true some arent, again its hard to tell who is real and who is not so real. Its best to stick with the pack. hang out with some of your local car clubs in the city your in, find out what they have, get a sense of what you like and what you dont. I am currently in talks to finalize a HID agreement for the local car club, I decided on this one vendor since they could provide a complete solution for a 6000k kit, a proven no hassle warranty, and anti flicker kit. A review will appear on my blog by the weekend.
3. Before you buy a kit from anyone find out if they include or can include an Anti Flicker plug and play option. This will protect you from the voltage problems that occur when your HID is not set into the on Position. the daytime running lights do not send the proper amount of power to allow for a stable and sustained HID discharge. If your bulbs continue to flicker the contant arcing will shorten the life of your bulb.
Search around there are alot of deals out there.
Cheers
Generally speaking you don't run HIDs on both your high beams and your low beams, it's cost prohibitive and you would need to worry about running multiple ballasts, wires, etc. Pick one (ideally low beams) and go with it. From what I remember, D2R is a bulb type much like 9006 or H7. You need a 9006 retrofit kit. No one actually makes a 9006 HID kit, they are all retrofits using already available lights. Good kits will come with everything you need. This is one option http://www.xenonfactory.com/ I will likely order a kit from them. Yes they are more expensive than other suppliers but I like the warranty they have and I like how they don't have a lot of BS all over the place.
Just to give you an idea of a setup similiar to what I used, to get past the DRL lowbeams. I dont use the OEM lowbeam harness at all anymore. The wiring shown in the diagram uses the harness that comes with the kit, giving it a direct link to the battery.

You dont need to tap the relay into the ignition (you can have it triggered by the parking lights instead) thats just my fake DRL-mode.

I wanted HID's on my 2006 LANCER. But I needed a projector kit and multiple ballasts for separate high and low beams. I need to also cutoff my daytime running lights. And that's not only pricey, but my idea seems complicated just for lights that aim wider but illuminate less further because of the projector.
Without the projector, you catch the eye of the law.

not true , i have had them for a yr and a half and they look really nice and all you have to do is face them down a little to make them not blind people , and specail adapters are used to work with drl's, and there is also slim ballasts that are the size of a creidt card so if you wanted hi and low beam hid it wouldnt be crouded
