Question Exhaust sounds...

Hey peoples. Just a big fat ol' generic question for you all. One with a really open ended answer, but I figured I'd try anyhow

The other night I was driving around here in Ottawa when an O•Z just like my own pulls up beside me and then drives off. I followed him for a bit because I was completely enthralled with the sound of his engine. It wasn't the typical flat "BRRRRRRRRRRRRRIP" or rounded "BWOOOOOOOOOM" sounds that you usually hear out of people's modded exhausts. It sounded clean, no backfiring or stuttering, just a nice smooth midrange "VVVVVVVNNNNNNNN". Not too deep, not too treble-y, not too noisy. Absolutely perfect. Anyone have any ideas on how he got this sound or heard anything similar? Yes, I realize it could be any infinite number of parts that he changed but you don't know unless you ask. Thanks for any potential help!
