How Much More Is Insurance With Turbo?

Ok,
Heres the deal. im saving for a turbo kit but i have to tell my insurance state farm. I wasn't going to tell them but my dad said i must if i want turbo. So how much do you think its going to cost ontop of my normal insurance. i told my dad that we didn't have to tell them and he said yes you do if you want your policy to be honored in an accident. He said they could also sue you for fraud if they found out you had a turbo and never told them.
what do you think

I think your dad has a point, but only if you got into a wreck because you were racing while simultaneously misleading your insurance company. But, say you pay for your policy upfront for 6 months and then 2 months down the road install a turbo...do you then have to go back to the insurance agency to re-adjust your policy??? No. So as far as fraud is concerned I'd say it's unlikely to say the least. But if you are about to sign a new policy it's probably best to have the turbo insured as well as any other valuable items on the car. My insurance was only increased about $50 for all my mods when I renewed my policy the last time. A turbo might cost you an extra $200-300 on your 6-month policy. Checking as many places as you can is your best bet. Good luck.

I'd suggest not telling them. Only tell them if your worried that if you crash, you want the 4000$US for a new turbo kit. Though I'm crazy so maybe you should ask other people too =)

if the car is under your name and yer a new driver dont tell them... insurance people are punks.. they will squeeze as much money out of you as they can if they know you have something like a turbo in your car... but if it is under your dads name and your just an add on driver you might as well... might cost you another 50-100 dollars a month for insuring it but it's well worth it... i mean 4000 dollars... c'mon... just my opinion

the only reason you need to tell insurance is if you want it replaced if the car is totalled. It is just added on like extra coverage for stereo equipment.

there is a certain monthly (or quartly) fee per $1000 usually that you insurance company will tell you.

EDIT: I just hung up the phone with my insurance company and they wont cover anything that affects the performance of the vehicle. No matter what. If it were suspension, or anything like that then there is a fee of $90 per year for 5,000 worth of coverage.

Some companies offer specialty car insurance... basically covers your car and all the extras... you will pay for this though big time. Also you have to keep all the receipts for everything moded on the car. All other insurances don't care... they figure you modify it and crash then you lose... they will only repair stock parts/oem replacement parts. Good luck with the insurance hope it works out

I got put on Facility Insurance as soon as my insurance found out I had modded my car they flipped out and said "your car has been modified for appearance and performance reasons you are no longer eligible for regular policy coverage"

So I pay out the *** for insurance for the car and I don't even have a turbo kit.

some words of wisdom, try to find a good insurance company and a good guy that works for them and stick with it even if it may seem hard, my family has had the same guy for 15 years, he hooks it up ;]

If I were you, I'd call the insurance company claiming to be someone else, and ask for a quote on a Lancer with a turbo with your age and driving record. I know that it's not as simple as the turbo itself being covered. Part of the insurance rates are based on the car's power to weight ratio, because faster cars can theoretically get into more trouble. So if you want to find out without them investigating everything youve done to your car, try this first and then decide if you want to go through with it.

Approach your insurance company about added value insurance. Don't let them sell you a show car type policy, just additional coverage beyond what your Lancer would cost to repair stock. I don't know where you live, but it is similar to stereo insurance that Guru mentioned. I don't know what it costs now a days, but the last time I bought some it was $200/year for $5500 of coverage. I don't know how old you are which is another big variable as far as expense.

I only pay $840/year, but similar to Guru, I am 35, married, kids, and house so my agent loves me with all those policies.

Well i called state farm and they said that they just wont cover the cost of the turbo but the liability and all that other **** is still normal. And that the car will still be insured with what every policy i have. So now i just need to sell My Bike and ATV.... ME SO HAPPY....
