Question Oil and filters

I just want to take a quick survey. How many times have you changed your oil. What oil and filter do you like to use on the US Lancer. how often do you change it yourself. If you take it some place what place and how often. And how many miles do you have on your car.
I have under 6000 miles
I use .
Valvoline 5-30.
purolator oil filter.
I change it about every 1000-2000 miles.
I have under 6000 miles

There was a fantastic thread about the quality of oil filters for the Lancer and the K&N hands down was the highest quality. Tons of great pics in there as well.

Just passed 21k. Every 3k, it gets 4 qts. of Castrol 5W-30, a new oil filter, fuel injector cleaner, and oil system cleaner. I used to use STP oil filters, but I just switched to K&N - they are supposed to last for 4 oil changes instead of the usual 2. I dunno if I'll actually leave it on for 12k or not, but it's worth the money with K&N's good reputation.

That link up above was great. I am just curious what people are using and how frequently they service the vehicle.
The manual recomends 7,500 for normal driving and a filter every other change. Severe is 3,000 and the same interval with the filter. I just wonder if anybody follows this or does it sooner and if so how much sooner.

I find the 7500 hard to believe. I almost fell over when I first saw that. I change my oil every 3000, and it looks pretty dirty. I don't even want to think what it would do to leave it in for another 4500 miles.

I change my oil and filter (on my 2002 OZ) every 7,500 miles. I use Mobil 1 (5w30) oil and the Puralator Pure One filter. I have 45,000+ miles on my car already and the engine is running strong. It may seem like a long time between oil changes but I do a lot of highway driving and if you remember when Mobil 1 first came out I think they recomended changing your oil every 12,000-15,000 miles. Now for liability reasons they say to just abide by your owners manual. I have a friend who use to chance the Mobil 1 in his SHO every 30,000 miles and the car had over 200,000 miles on it when he sold it.
Mobil 1 is to oil what blizzaks are to snow tires.

I agree with blacksheepdj. 7,500 seems a bit much. I usually like to change it by the color and that is pretty dirty right about 2000 so I dont know 7,500 just seems a bit excessive.

A question about the synthetic. Does that get as dirty as fast as conventional oil. And Driver what filter do you use.

I use Mobil1 5w30... it stays in for 10k miles, with a filter change at 3k miles.... (then obviously a top off to replace lost oil which was in filter)... I've posted about this before, but not many people seem to care, there is a great website for oil analysis, which I have linked to below. For about $20 you can have your oil tested, to see how much it has broken down..... Mobil1 and Amsoil have been at the top of the tests on every car (although each different engine works better with different oil, some Toyotas like Mobil1 and some like Amsoil...) From the forums on there, I have seen people receive their tested oil, and Mobil1 consistently gets at least 10k miles before breakdown.... Frankly speaking (and some people will have a problem with this, truth hurts...), it's an absolute myth to change your oil every 3k miles, and a clever marketing scare by places like Jiffy Lube..... Manufacturers thoroughly test their engines with different oils, and at different drain intervals.... Hondas drain intervals have been set at well over 3k miles for years.... The filter is the weak part of the filtration sytem (in most cases, not all) which is why it needs to be changed more often....
With full Synthetic (Mobil1 or Amsoil) you will notice quicker revs, and lower oil temperatures.... I have also recently switched to Red Line gear oil in my Lancer (the MTL model which is for 75w90 oil), which has also received rave reviews under stress tests, and am now benefitting from hot-knife-through-butter-like shifting (no kidding)..... the effect takes about 1k miles to really notice, and I will never go back to petroleum based products....
There have been numerous tests by publications on the benefits of synthetic lubricants, the one which sticks out in my mind was done by the editor of European Car magazine, BMW owner, who changed to full synthetics in his engine, tranny and differential, and gained 7hp....
There is a reason why Mobil1 is original equipment oil in the following (to name a few): All F-body cars (Firebird/Camaro), Corvette, all Porsches, all Aston Martins, all AMG Mercedes and many others.... Mobil1 is printed on the oil filler cap.... Nuf said...

Dirt is dirt. If dino sees dirt and synth sees dirt, they both get dirty. Mine has a tendency to get dark quickly. (M1 15w50)

True, although I just drained mine after 10k miles and it was a nice honey brown.... I could still see through it.... Just curious, why are you running that weight?? The manual calls for 5w30, and if it's a new Lancer, you shouldn't have to worry about leakage from a thinner oil (synthetic)....???
