a very important read on HID conversion kits

you might want to sticky this admin.

now this is not a HOW TO or anything like that, i just couldn't find anywhere better to put, so i posted it here.

i was getting very impatient for waiting too long for a company to release a projector headlight, so i decided maybe i should get an HID conversion kit instead....so i did some research and found this website:

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...s/Hid/HID.html

this guy who's an engineer/electrician talks about hid conversion kits and bulbs inside and out and explains EVERYTHING: the good, the bad and the ugly.

i highly suggest you all read up on this if ur planning to get an hid kit.

this convinced me not to get one.

you also might want to note that aftermarket HID conversions are illegal as of like last year

If they're illegal why is it they still sell them in Pep Boys, Autozone and on imports?

What imports did they originally come on?

Why are they now illegal?

read the article. all old news. i still want HIDs, despite this guy's attempt to reiterate the inherent "disadvantages" to doing so (exaggerated and not quite as relevant as he would have you believe, IMHO).

show me some cold, hard numbers if you want to convince me of anything. vague and esoteric jabber won't do it.

You’ve got to enjoy how this article doesn’t quantify anything it states or provide any references to defend the ideas it presents.

It’s just a great big IMHO article without stating such from the outset.

It doesn't really need to quantify anything - it's talking theory, not equations. And his theory is largely sound. Ultimately, it can be summed up by saying headlights are more than just reflective glass spreading a light source. There is engineering involved in designing them to project particular concentrations of light in particular places, with regard for the safety of others and your own visibility.

A HID conversion kit can't be designed with that in mind, because at best, it's a hack to make the original headlight assembly fit a different bulb. Yes, it can work, but not with engineering precision. His reasoning about the direction of the filaments/arcs and precise locations is dead on, even though he doesn't use numbers to show it. Consider the difference in headlight direction from being only a millimeter off when you're measuring at 40 feet away - it's huge and only magnified by the lens and reflectors.

And finally, the most important point, is that of high beams. I can't recall how many times I've heard someone here claim that you don't need high beams when you have HID lights, and immediately I lose interest in anything they may have to say. If anyone really thinks that high beams are somehow brighter, they should probably go sit in a car and try turning them on. High beams are higher off the ground, for visibility at longer distances. If you don't need high beams with your HID conversion kit, that's only because you're precision is off such that you're blinding everyone with essentially always-on high beams... and brighter ones at that.

Anyway, I take safety very seriously - and there is a good reason these kits aren't legal. Just discounting this guy because you refuse to follow his logic is downright silly though. Be your own devil's advocate and you'll realize you're just making excuses because you want a pretty toy.

^ agreed.. i was hesitant about spending 400+ dollars on just HIDs, but after all was said and done, i have to admit that this was the BEST $400 i have ever spent. from here on out, the first mod on all my future cars will be HIDs..

For the record high beam filaments in bulbs are typically a higher wattage. Not always, but many times they are. They are also higher as well.

The rest I don't want to comment on, because I don't have the energy for that long of a post right now.

This is why most cars with hid headlights come with halogen foglamps.
