Spiderman: Check the link www.sclc.net we meet at various locations. Next one is at the Eibach factory on June 19th. As for CARB exempt, technically it doesn't have to get certification because it doesn't change any emissions equipment (anything up to and including the cat), so in that sense any catback should be smog legal.

WADAD: I got the catback from RRM. I was going to see if I could weld one myself, but decided a direct bolt-on is a much better way to go.

I wanted to custom make one but I might just do like yourself and get onealready pre-made. It only makes sense and I might be able to install it myself from what everyone is saying.

Thanks

If you want to get a quiet exhaust, why not just not get one at all. An exhaust doesn't do next to anything for performance and is not cost effective. I got the RMR Axle-Back because I like the sound, not because it does anything (I only paid $200 for it too). Just stick with the stock exhaust and get the RRM piggyback if you want better performance yet not get attention from the cops.

edit: ^^^ an exhaust doesn't do much for performance if you stay NA.

Stock dynos around 103 whp.
And how much did you spend on your setup and how loud is it? With retail prices (Header ~ $300, Exhaust ~ $400, CAI ~ $200) that's damn near $1000 for 16 whp. From what peopel have said in other threads this setup is loud, even louder with the test pipe added. If you go with a piggyback ($439 or grab one used for cheaper) you get around 12 whp and it doesn't affect the sound of your car at all. This is why I suggested it, because this guy wants something quiet.

but you have to figure in not only immediate up front costs, but the possibility of future costs. first and foremost is the fact that you have to use higher grade gas with the piggyback. you figure 10 cents extra per gallon for 91 opposed to 87, and the lancers 11 gallon tank, thats 1.10 each fill up. gas up every week if you drive alot, and thats close to 60 bucks extra a year just to buy gasoline cause of the piggy back.

not to mention the piggyback works at its fullest(and most efficient) when you have previous bolt ons. wouldn't it be better to get the bolt ons first and then grab the piggyback to take full advantage of it?

True, it all depends on what you want to do with your car. Personally, I don't feel modding the Lancer engine-wise is worth it at all unless you go turbo/super charge. I'll keep my axle-back because I love the sound, but I got rid of the piggy and I'm trying to decide what to do with the CAI sitting in my garage (probably sell it too since I haven't installed it to stay stock class in SCCA). I'll spend my money on some mods for my other car which has more potential with an engine swap (175hp turbo motor capable of over 300hp on stock internals).

True, if you want it to stay completely quiet, put a 4" tip on the stock exhaust. I ran around like that for over a year and was happy. I went with a catback for the extra few horsepower I can get out of it, and it's nice that it is not too loud, just an intimidating rumble.

really? 103whp at stock? i thought it was @between 96-101...

my setup...never reached 60db and was nothin but deep lovely sound...the whole setup prolly cost me like $700 at most...yeah i said 700 thats for greddy exhaust, AEM CAI, kamikaze header with dp...i never got the test pipe because its not worth it...plus it maked you loose a lot on the low end...like other stated above...if i would have gotten the piggy then i would have been at around 130+ whp...since the piggy would have maximized the mods....

I highly doubt it. The legal limit it 90 db (or is it 95?) and I don't think a stock Lancer is even close. I was at a race last Fall and the starter put his ear next to my hood to make sure the car was turned on!!!
