How To Install Coilovers!

I just bought some coilovers from ebay, and my "friend" is charging me $50 each to install. Total of $200.

Anyways, I wanted to know if they were that hard to install. I have all the tool, but not the knowledge. I could really use mayor help on this guys. Any help will be great. Thanks!

follow the instructions on here for installing springs, but instead of taking apart the strut assembly, replace it with your coilovers

$200 is a lot. I just rented some spring compresors from autozone for like $50 ( when you return them you get your money back, so its kind of free) and all you need after that is an air gun. The first time I installed springs was on my buddys car and neither one of us knew what we were doing but if you have any common sense you wont have too much trouble. Where are you located david, I may be able to help you but I doubt you are anywhere close to me. If your "friend" knows how to do it and wants to charge you and you have the money to blow but I dont thing I would pay a "friend" to help me do anything to my car. Where I am from we all just help eachother for free. Plus I would rather pay a shop with a lift to do it for the same price. Why? faster, safer, and if they screw it up they will have to pay for it. If your so called "friend" broke something he would just say "oops" and you would be screwed. Hope that helps. Let me know if you want to know the details on installation. Its been a while since I put mine on but I will do the best I can.

Oh wait, are they just coilover sleeves (springs), or is it the whole strut assembly with the shock and spring together?

Just the springs. No struts

WOw that is a great point. He is like an all-in-one mechanic, but I don't know why he is charging me so much. He will do everything, and get it aligned too, but he works out of his garage with his tools. No big guns. I am located by Fort Worth,TX. I want to do them since I want to learn about this, but I've heard is so dangerious due to the spring.

It takes apx. 1 hour to install so therefor your "friend" is charging you $200 labour per hour. Unless he estimated that it would take 2 hours. The he is charging you $100 per hour, which is still too much.

Coilovers are easy. Expecially the fronts (20min for both sides tops)
If he is charging you that much just go to a shop and pay the $85.00/hr labour rate (thats adverage dealer rate in Ontario you can find it less)

So how long will it take for all 4? I really don't want to do them myself without any knowledge. I might ruin something, and I got places to go everyday :-)

Anyways, He is charging me $200 total. To Put them on, and aligned the car too. He said $50 each! That equals to $200. I still can't believe my so call FRIEND is doing this.

If anybody around the DFW area could help me, please let me know. I don't mind driving some miles since about 250 miles=$30 full tank.

I really don't want to leave it at a shop. I want to learn too. Like you do one, I do one. Gotta know for the future. Will not have the money everytime I get coilovers.
If I can't get help, I'll try it this weekend. Could you guys tell me what tool I need. I got the wrenches, but not the spring compressor.

*Spring Compressor
*Wrenches(got them all!)
*And........

Thanks so much you guys!

Holy crap, your FRIEND is charging you $200!?!? Some friend! I've done spring installs on 2 of my friends' Evos and all I asked them for was to buy me lunch! If I lived near you I'd help ya out...

If it's your first time it could take a few hours to DIY and learn but it's really not that hard.

I had my coilovers installed for $200 bucks and I know I got ripped off. I tried to do it myself without air tools and had no luck. It's hard to find places that will install coilovers. I think a friend with air tools is the best option.
Word of warning....make sure you have a place that can align a lowered car before you install the coilovers. Many alignment shops can not accomadate lowered cars.
