How to import into the states from Japan

I have a Lancer Evolution 3 which I bought here in Japan and was wondering if any one knows how I could import it into the states. I am US Air Force and I would really like to take my car back to the states. If any one has any suggestions let me know thanks!

If you arent the highest ranking soldier in the AF bro you are so gonna be broke... I am in the military and its such a waste...if there are no 3's in the US... YOU have to have some crash tested...at your expense.... and a whole slew of other useless crap...

I use to live in Okinawa aswell, On another note registering the car in the states will also be difficult due to the VIN# japans VIN# usually have some dashes in them "-" When trying to register your car with the DMV the computer will not recognize the VIN#. Here is a little hint if that problem occurs add zeros in place of the dash "0".

Like stated before you'll have to prove alot of stuff inorder to get a GO. i.e. emissions, safety etc.

Your best bet is to sell the car before you come back stateside. or go to that website and call someone directly http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...ite/index.html

It sucks having a duty station overseas sometimes, Suck it up and drive on.
oh yeah, talk to your chain of command im sure that you can extract the info you need from them.

My understanding is that if there is a "comparable" car already over here, you can bypass some of the bull**** in place (like crash testing). The closest comparable car here to the Evo 3 is an older Mirage I believe. You might be screwed though, since the "Mirage" isn't a "Lancer" over here.

Ok go a buy one of those Big Freaking Metal Wings, Next bolt it down real tight, Then Find a run way, Get your car up to top speed, And let that wing fly you home.

break it down into misc parts and ship it over as parts. register as a mirage (vin swap) and enjoy!

So in this case he woud have to ship it over, buy a comparable mirage, then do a vin swap and register? That seems worth it to me

can't you just pull eng/trans seperate from chassis and then put it all back together here and call it a kit car? I think that's what they do with one of the super high performance sports cars...

Yeah this importing thing is getting annoying. We have watched so many people get screwed over trying to get there cars back. My husband is the one in the USAF. This is my car(Lancer Evo 3) I love it. We also have a Rnessa that we want to take back as a show car. But how it is looking we are not going to take any one back. It is to much of a hastle to get it back, but it would be worth it if we could. We are in Okinawa and will be here untill 2009. Its nice! But it is hard to like any of the cars becuase they get played out. It seems like every one has a damn skyline and every one thinks there awesome. Don't get me wrong I like them but when you can through a penny and hit five in a row its hard. They are the Honda's and Eclipes of Japan. My evo is one of a kind. There are a handle full out here but the all look alike(white) that was the standard color of the 3rd adition though. When mine gets out of the paint shop I will put pictures up. It is midnight blue, the only one like it out here. Thank you guys so much for your help. I will get picture together soon.
